The Great Expedition of Badr

Translation

✧ [Abū al-ʿĀṣ with the Messenger and Zaynab’s sending for his ransom] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not make lawful or unlawful in Makkah, being overruled in his affair. Islam had separated between Zaynab bt. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when she became Muslim and Abū al-ʿĀṣ b. al-Rabīʿ, except that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was not able to separate between them. So she remained with him upon her Islam while he was upon his polytheism, until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ emigrated. When Quraysh went to Badr, Abū al-ʿĀṣ b. al-Rabīʿ went among them, and he was taken among the captives on the day of Badr. He was in Madinah with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Ibn Isḥāq said: Yaḥyā b. ʿAbbād b. ʿAbd Allah b. al-Zubayr narrated to me, from his father ʿAbbād, from ʿĀʾishah, who said: When the people of Makkah sent for the ransom of their captives, Zaynab bt. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent for the ransom of Abū al-ʿĀṣ b. al-Rabīʿ with wealth, and she sent in it a necklace of hers which Khadījah had given her to wear when she was given in marriage to Abū al-ʿĀṣ. She said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw it, he felt intense compassion for her and said: “If you see fit to release her captive to her and return her wealth to her, then do so.” They said: “Yes, O Messenger of Allah.” So they released him and returned to her what was hers.
