Translation
✧ Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿUkkāshah b. Miḥṣan b. Ḥurthān al-Asadī, the ally of Banū ʿAbd Shams, fought on the day of Badr with his sword until it broke in his hand. He came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he gave him a piece of wood and said: “Fight with this, O ʿUkkāshah.” When he took it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he shook it, and it became a long sword in his hand, tall in stature, strong in blade, white of iron. He fought with it until Allah granted victory to the Muslims. That sword was called “al-ʿAwn.” Then it remained with him, and he witnessed the battles with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with it until Ṭulayḥah al-Asadī killed him in the days of the riddah. Ṭulayḥah recited a poem about that, including his saying: In the evening I left Ibn Aqram lying low, and ʿUkkāshah al-Ghanmī at the place of combat. Ṭulayḥah later embraced Islam, as will be explained. Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿUkkāshah is the one who said, when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave his community glad tidings of seventy thousand who would enter Paradise without reckoning or punishment: “Supplicate Allah to make me one of them.” He said: “O Allah, make him one of them.” This hadith is recorded in the Ṣiḥāḥ and Ḥisān and elsewhere. Ibn Isḥāq said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, as it reached me: “From us is the best horseman among the Arabs.” They said: “And who is he, O Messenger of Allah?” He said: “ʿUkkāshah b. Miḥṣan.” Ḍirār b. al-Azwar al-Asadī said: “That is a man from us, O Messenger of Allah.” He said: “He is not from you, but he is from us because of the alliance.” Al-Bayhaqī narrated from al-Ḥākim, through Muḥammad b. ʿUmar al-Wāqidī: ʿUmar b. ʿUthmān al-Jaḥshī narrated to me, from his father, from his paternal aunt, who said: ʿUkkāshah b. Miḥṣan said: “My sword broke on the day of Badr, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave me a stick, and behold, it was a long white sword. I fought with it until Allah defeated the polytheists.” And it remained with him until he perished. Al-Wāqidī said: Usāmah b. Zayd narrated to me, from Dāwūd b. al-Ḥuṣayn, from several men of Banū ʿAbd al-Ashhal, who said: “The sword of Salamah b. Ḥarīsh broke on the day of Badr, and he remained unarmed with no weapon. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave him a stalk that was in his hand from the date-palm spadix of Ibn Ṭāb, and said: ‘Strike with it.’ And behold, it was a fine sword. It remained with him until he was killed on the day of the Bridge of Abū ʿUbayd.”
