The Great Expedition of Badr

Translation

✧ His ﷺ restoring the eye of Qatādah Al-Bayhaqī said in “al-Dalāʾil”: Abū Saʿd al-Mālīnī informed us; Abū Aḥmad b. ʿAdī informed us; Abū Yaʿlā narrated to us; Yaḥyā al-Ḥimmānī narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Sulaymān, Ibn al-Ghasīl, narrated to us, from ʿĀṣim b. ʿUmar b. Qatādah, from his father, from his grandfather Qatādah b. al-Nuʿmān, that his eye was struck on the day of Badr, and his eyeball flowed down onto his cheek. They wanted to cut it off, so they asked the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he said: “No.” Then he called for him and pressed his eyeball with the palm of his hand, and he could not tell which of his eyes had been struck. In another narration: it became the better of his two eyes. We have narrated from the Commander of the Believers ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz that when ʿĀṣim b. ʿUmar b. Qatādah informed him of this ḥadīth, and recited along with that: I am the son of one whose eye flowed down the cheek, then was restored by the palm of the Chosen One—what a restoration! Then ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, may God have mercy on him, said at that point, reciting the words of Umayyah b. Abī al-Ṣalt concerning Sayf b. Dhī Yazan, and ʿUmar recited them in their proper place: Truly Those are the noble deeds, not two wooden bowls of milk mixed with water, which afterwards became urine.
