The Great Expedition of Badr
مَقْتَلُ أَبِي ذَاتِ الْكَرِشِ رَوَى الْبُخَارِيُّ عَنِ الزُّبَيْرِ بْنِ الْعَوَّامِ قَالَ: لَقِيتُ يَوْمَ بَدْرٍ عُبَيْدَةَ بْنَ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْعَاصِ وَهُوَ مُدَجَّجٌ لَا يُرَى مِنْهُ إِلَّا عَيْنَاهُ، وَكَانَ يُكَنَّى أَبَا ذَاتِ الْكَرِشِ، فَقَالَ: أَنَا أَبُو ذَاتِ الْكَرِشِ، فَحَمَلْتُ عَلَيْهِ بِالْعَنَزَةِ فَطَعَنْتُهُ فِي عَيْنِهِ فَمَاتَ. قَالَ هِشَامُ بْنُ عُرْوَةَ: فَأَخْبَرْتُ الزُّبَيْرَ قَالَ: لَقَدْ وَضَعْتُ رِجْلِي عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ تَمَطَّيْتُ، فَكَانَ الْجَهْدُ أَنْ نَزَعْتُهَا وَقَدِ انْثَنَى طَرَفُهَا. قَالَ عُرْوَةُ: فَسَأَلَهُ إِيَّاهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَأَعْطَاهُ إِيَّاهَا، فَلَمَّا قُبِضَ عُمَرُ أَخَذَهَا، ثُمَّ طَلَبَهَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَأَعْطَاهُ إِيَّاهَا، فَلَمَّا قُبِضَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ أَخَذَهَا، ثُمَّ سَأَلَهَا عُمَرُ فَأَعْطَاهُ إِيَّاهَا، فَلَمَّا قُبِضَ عُمَرُ أَخَذَهَا، ثُمَّ طَلَبَهَا عُثْمَانُ مِنْهُ فَأَعْطَاهُ إِيَّاهَا، فَلَمَّا قُتِلَ وَقَعَتْ عِنْدَ آلِ عَلِيٍّ، وَطَلَبَهَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الزُّبَيْرِ فَكَانَتْ عِنْدَهُ حَتَّى قُتِلَ.
Translation
✧ The killing of Abū Dhāt al-Karish Al-Bukhārī narrated from al-Zubayr b. al-ʿAwwām who said: On the day of Badr I met ʿUbaydah b. Saʿīd b. al-ʿĀṣ while he was fully armed, nothing visible from him except his two eyes. He was called Abū Dhāt al-Karish. He said: “I am Abū Dhāt al-Karish.” So I charged him with the spear and stabbed him in his eye, and he died. Hishām b. ʿUrwah said: I informed al-Zubayr, and he said: I placed my foot on him, then I stretched; it was a strenuous effort that I pulled it out, and its tip had bent. ʿUrwah said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him for it, and he gave it to him. When ʿUmar died, he took it, then Abū Bakr sought it and he gave it to him. When Abū Bakr died, he took it, then ʿUmar asked for it and he gave it to him. When ʿUmar died, he took it, then ʿUthmān asked him for it and he gave it to him. When he was killed, it fell to the family of ʿAlī. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr sought it, and it remained with him until he was killed.
