The Great Expedition of Badr

Translation

✧ [The Departure of Quraysh] Ibn Isḥāq said: Quraysh had departed when morning came, and they advanced. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw them descending from al-ʿAqanqal—which is the sand dune from which they came down into the valley—he said: "O Allah, this is Quraysh, who have come with their arrogance and their pride, opposing You and denying Your Messenger. O Allah, grant me the victory You promised me. O Allah, destroy them this morning." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ also said—having seen ʿUtbah b. Rabīʿah among the people upon a red camel of his—"If there is any good in anyone among the people, it is with the owner of the red camel. If they obey him, they will be guided." Khufāf b. Aymāʾ b. Raḥaḍah al-Ghifārī, or his father Aymāʾ b. Raḥaḍah al-Ghifārī, had sent to Quraysh, when they passed by him, a son of his with some slaughtered camels as a gift for them, and he said: "If you wish, we can reinforce you with weapons and men." He said: So they sent back to him with his son: "May kinship keep you close. You have fulfilled what was upon you. By my life, if we are fighting only men, we are not too weak for them; but if we are fighting Allah, as Muḥammad claims, then no one has any power against Allah." [The Conversion of Ibn Ḥizām] When the people encamped, a group of Quraysh came forward until they reached the watering-place of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, among them Ḥakīm b. Ḥizām. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Leave them alone." No man drank from it that day but he was killed, except for Ḥakīm b. Ḥizām, for he was not killed. He later embraced Islam, and his Islam was excellent. When he exerted himself in swearing an oath, he would say: "No, by the One who saved me on the day of Badr."
