The Great Expedition of Badr
قَالَ ابْنُ إِسْحَاقَ: فَحَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ، أَنَّهُ حُدِّثَ أَنَّ سَعْدَ بْنَ مُعَاذٍ قَالَ: يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ، أَلَّا نَبْنِيَ لَكَ عَرِيشًا تَكُونُ فِيهِ، وَنُعِدُّ عِنْدَكَ رَكَائِبَكَ، ثُمَّ نَلْقَى عَدُوَّنَا، فَإِنْ أَعَزَّنَا اللَّهُ وَأَظْهَرَنَا عَلَى عَدُوِّنَا، كَانَ ذَلِكَ مَا أَحْبَبْنَا، وَإِنْ كَانَتِ الْأُخْرَى، جَلَسْتَ عَلَى رَكَائِبِكَ فَلَحِقْتَ بِمَنْ وَرَاءَنَا مِنْ قَوْمِنَا، فَقَدْ تَخَلَّفَ عَنْكَ أَقْوَامٌ مَا نَحْنُ بِأَشَدِّ حُبًّا لَكَ مِنْهُمْ، وَلَوْ ظَنُّوا أَنَّكَ تَلْقَى حَرْبًا مَا تَخَلَّفُوا عَنْكَ، يَمْنَعُكَ اللَّهُ بِهِمْ، يُنَاصِحُونَكَ وَيُجَاهِدُونَ مَعَكَ. فَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ خَيْرًا وَدَعَا لَهُ بِخَيْرٍ، ثُمَّ بُنِيَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَرِيشٌ كَانَ فِيهِ.
Translation
✧ Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Bakr narrated to me that it was narrated that Saʿd b. Muʿādh said: “O Prophet of God, shall we not build for you a shelter in which you can be, and prepare your riding camels near you; then we will meet our enemy. If God strengthens us and grants us victory over our enemy, that will be what we love; and if it is the other, you may mount your riding camels and join those of our people behind us. For some people have stayed behind from you, though we are not more intense in love for you than they are; had they thought that you would meet battle, they would not have stayed behind from you. God protects you through them; they counsel you sincerely and strive alongside you.” The Messenger of God ﷺ praised him well and supplicated for him for good. Then a shelter was built for the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he was in it.
