The Great Expedition of Badr

Translation

✧ Al-Ḥubāb b. al-Mundhir b. al-Jamūḥ said, according to what Ibn Isḥāq related: "O Messenger of Allah, do you consider this stopping place a place which Allah has made you to alight, such that we should not advance beyond it or fall back from it, or is it a matter of opinion, war, and stratagem?" He said: "Rather, it is a matter of opinion, war, and stratagem." He said: "O Messenger of Allah, this is not the place. So move with the people until we come to the nearest water to the enemy, and we will halt there. Then we will choke up the wells beyond it, and build a cistern on it, and fill it with water. Then we will fight the people. We will drink and they will not drink." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "You have indeed given sound advice." Ibn Saʿd mentioned that Jibrīl descended upon the Prophet ﷺ and said: "The right course is what al-Ḥubāb indicated." So he ﷺ and those with him moved off until, when he reached the nearest water to the enemy, he halted there at midnight. Then he ordered the wells to be choked up, and he built a cistern on the well where he had halted and filled it with water, and they threw vessels into it.
