The Great Expedition of Badr

Translation

✧ From Abū ʿImrān, that he heard Abū Ayyūb al-Anṣārī say: The Messenger of God ﷺ said, while we were in Madinah, "I have been informed about the caravan of Abū Sufyān that it is approaching. Would you like us to go out toward this caravan, so that perhaps God may grant us its spoils?" We said, "Yes." So he went out and we went out. When we had traveled for a day or two, he said to us, "What do you think about the people, for they have been informed of your departure?" We said, "No, by God, we have no strength to fight the people; we only wanted the caravan." Then he said, "What do you think about fighting the people?" We said something similar. Then al-Miqdād b. ʿAmr said, "Then we will not say to you, O Messenger of God, as the people of Moses said to Moses: 'Go, you and your Lord, and fight; we are sitting here.'" He said: Then we, the company of the Anṣār, wished that we had said what al-Miqdād said, which would be dearer to us than having great wealth. Then God, Mighty and Majestic, revealed to His Messenger: "As your Lord brought you out of your home in truth, while a party of the believers were averse" [al-Anfāl: 5]. And he mentioned the remainder of the ḥadīth. Ibn Mardawayh also narrated from the path of Muḥammad b. ʿAmr b. ʿAlqama b. Waqqāṣ al-Laythī, from his father, from his grandfather, who said: The Messenger of God ﷺ went out to Badr until, when he was at al-Rawḥāʾ, he addressed the people and said, "How do you see it?" Abū Bakr said, "O Messenger of God, it has reached us that they are at such-and-such a place." He said: Then he addressed the people again and said, "How do you see it?" ʿUmar said something similar to the words of Abū Bakr.
