The Great Expedition of Badr

Translation

✧ [The Muslims' route to Badr] Ibn Isḥāq said: He took his route from Madinah to Makkah, by the mountain pass of Madinah, then by al-ʿAqīq, then by Dhū al-Ḥulayfah, then by Ūlāt al-Jaysh. Ibn Hishām said: Dhāt al-Jaysh. [The man who intercepted the Messenger and Salamah's reply to him] Ibn Isḥāq said: Then he passed by Turbān, then by Malal, then Ghamīs al-Ḥamām from Marayayn, then by Ṣukhayrāt al-Yamām, then by al-Sayyālah, then by Fajj al-Rawḥāʾ, then by Shanūkah, which is the level road; until when he was at ʿIrq al-Ẓabyah — Ibn Hishām said: al-Ẓabyah, from other than Ibn Isḥāq — they met a man from the Bedouin, and asked him about the people, but found no news with him. The people said to him: Greet the Messenger of God ﷺ. He said: Is the Messenger of God among you? They said: Yes. So he greeted him, then said: If you are the Messenger of God, tell me what is in the belly of this she-camel of mine. Salamah b. Salāmah b. Waqsh said to him: Do not ask the Messenger of God ﷺ; turn to me and I will tell you about that. You mounted her, and in her belly is a female kid from you. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: Enough! You have spoken obscenely to the man. Then he turned away from Salamah. [The rest of the route to Badr] The Messenger of God ﷺ halted at Sajsaj, which is the well of al-Rawḥāʾ. Then he departed from it, until when he was at al-Munṣaraf, he left the road to Makkah on the left, and took the right-hand route by al-Nāziyah, heading for Badr. He proceeded in one of its districts until he crossed a valley called Ruḥqān, between al-Nāziyah and the narrow pass of al-Ṣafrāʾ, (then by the narrow pass), then descended from it, until when he was near al-Ṣafrāʾ, he sent Basbas b. al-Juhanī, confederate of Banū Sāʿidah, and ʿAdī b. Abī al-Zaghbāʾ al-Juhanī, confederate of Banū al-Najjār, to Badr to spy out for him the news about Abū Sufyān b. Ḥarb and others. When the Messenger of God ﷺ marched, he fasted a day or two. Then his crier called out: O company of the disobedient, I am breaking the fast, so break your fast. That was because he had said to them before that: Break your fast, but they did not do so. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ departed, and he had preceded it. When he faced al-Ṣafrāʾ, which is a village between two mountains, he asked about their two mountains, what were their names? They said: One of them is called Musliḥ, and the other is called Mukhriʾ. He asked about their inhabitants, and it was said: Banū al-Nār and Banū Ḥurāq, two clans of Banū Ghifār. The Messenger of God ﷺ disliked them and disliked passing between them, and he drew an ill omen from their names and the names of their inhabitants. So the Messenger of God ﷺ left them and al-Ṣafrāʾ on the left, and took the right-hand route by a valley called Dhafirān. He crossed it, then halted.
