The Great Expedition of Badr
Translation
✧ [The Messenger's ﷺ seeking assurance from the matter of the Anṣār] Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Give me your counsel, O people—and he meant only the Anṣār. That was because they were the majority of the people, and because when they pledged allegiance to him at al-ʿAqabah, they said: O Messenger of Allah, we are quit of your protection until you reach our land; when you reach us, you are under our protection, and we shall defend you as we defend our sons and our women. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ feared that the Anṣār might not consider themselves obliged to support him except against an enemy who attacked him in Madinah, and that they were not obligated to march with him against an enemy outside their own land. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said that, Saʿd b. Muʿādh said to him: By Allah, it is as if you mean us, O Messenger of Allah? He said: Yes. He said: We have believed in you and declared you truthful, and we have borne witness that what you have brought is the truth, and we have given you our covenants and our solemn pledges to hear and obey. So go forward, O Messenger of Allah, to what you desire, for we are with you. By Him who sent you with the truth, if you were to take us across this sea and plunge into it, we would plunge into it with you; not one man of us would remain behind. We do not dislike that you should meet our enemy with us tomorrow. We are steadfast in war, truthful in the encounter. Perhaps Allah will show you from us what will delight your eye. So march with us under the blessing of Allah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ rejoiced at Saʿd's words, and they encouraged him. Then he said: March forth and rejoice, for Allah, may He be exalted, has promised me one of the two parties. By Allah, it is as if I now look upon the places where the people will fall.
