Translation

✧ Ibn Isḥāq said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ placed Qays b. Abī Ṣaʿṣaʿah, the brother of Banū Māzin b. al-Najjār, in charge of the rear guard. Al-Umawī said: They had with them two horses; on one of them was Muṣʿab b. ʿUmayr, and on the other al-Zubayr b. al-ʿAwwām; and at times Saʿd b. Khaythamah, and at times al-Miqdād b. al-Aswad. Imām Aḥmad related from the ḥadīth of Abū Isḥāq, from Ḥārithah b. Muḍarrib, from ʿAlī, who said: There was no horseman among us on the day of Badr other than al-Miqdād. Al-Bayhaqī related from the route of Ibn Wahb, from Abū Ṣakhr, from Abū Muʿāwiyah al-Bajalī, from Saʿīd b. Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās, that ʿAlī said to him: We had only two horses with us: a horse for al-Zubayr and a horse for al-Miqdād b. al-Aswad — meaning on the day of Badr. Al-Umawī said: My father narrated to us; Ismāʿīl b. Abī Khālid narrated to us from al-Bahī, who said: With the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day of Badr there were two horsemen: al-Zubayr b. al-ʿAwwām on the right wing, and al-Miqdād b. al-Aswad on the left wing. Ibn Isḥāq said: They had with them seventy camels, which they rode in turns. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, ʿAlī, and Marthad b. Abī Marthad took turns riding one camel. Ḥamzah, Zayd b. Ḥārithah, Abū Kabshah, and Anasah took turns riding one camel. Thus said Ibn Isḥāq, may Allah Almighty have mercy on him. Imām Aḥmad said: ʿAffān narrated to us, from Ḥammād b. Salamah; ʿĀṣim b. Bahdalah narrated to us, from Zirr b. Ḥubaysh, from ʿAbd Allāh b. Masʿūd, who said: On the day of Badr, every three of us were on one camel. Abū Lubābah and ʿAlī were the two riding companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: It was the turn of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to walk, so the two of them said: We will walk instead of you. He said: "You two are not stronger than me, nor am I less in need of the reward than you two." Al-Nasāʾī related it from al-Fallās, from Ibn Mahdī, from Ḥammād b. Salamah, with the same chain. I say: Perhaps this was before he sent Abū Lubābah back from al-Rawḥāʾ, then his two riding companions became ʿAlī and Marthad instead of Abū Lubābah. And Allah knows best. Imām Aḥmad said: Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar narrated to us; Saʿīd narrated to us, from Qatādah, from Zurārah b. Awfā, from Saʿd b. Hishām, from ʿĀʾishah ؓ, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered that the bells be cut from the necks of the camels on the day of Badr. This meets the condition of the two Ṣaḥīḥs.
