The Expedition of Safawān (the First Expedition of Badr)
غَزْوَةُ سفوان وَهِيَ غَزْوَةُ بَدْرٍ الْأُولَى [ إِغَارَةُ كُرْزٍ وَالْخُرُوجُ فِي طَلَبِهِ ] قَالَ ابْنُ إِسْحَاقَ: لَمْ يَقُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِالْمَدِينَةِ حِينَ قَدِمَ مِنْ غَزْوَةِ الْعُشَيْرَةِ إِلَّا لَيَالِيَ قَلَائِلَ لَا تَبْلُغُ الْعَشَرَةَ. وَقَالَ ابْنُ حَزْمٍ: بَعْدَهَا بِعَشَرَةِ أَيَّامٍ خَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فِي رَبِيعٍ الْأَوَّلِ عَلَى رَأْسِ ثَلَاثَةَ عَشَرَ شَهْرًا مِنْ مُهَاجَرِهِ، فِي إِثْرِ كُرْزِ بْنِ جَابِرٍ الْفِهْرِيِّ؛ لِإِغَارَتِهِ عَلَى سَرْحِ الْمَدِينَةِ، وَكَانَ يَرْعَى بِالْجَمَّاءِ وَنَوَاحِيهَا، وَحَمَلَ لِوَاءَهُ ﷺ عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ ؓ، وَكَانَ أَبْيَضَ، وَاسْتَخْلَفَ عَلَى الْمَدِينَةِ زَيْدَ بْنَ حَارِثَةَ، فَطَلَبَ ﷺ كُرْزًا. قَالَ ابْنُ إسْحَاقَ: حَتَّى بَلَغَ وَادِيًا، يُقَالُ لَهُ: سَفْوَانُ، مِنْ نَاحِيَةِ بَدْرٍ، وَفَاتَهُ كُرْزُ بْنُ جَابِرٍ، فَلَمْ يُدْرِكْهُ ثُمَّ رَجَعَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إلَى الْمَدِينَةِ، فَأَقَامَ بِهَا بَقِيَّةَ جُمَادَى الْآخِرَةِ وَرَجَبًا وَشَعْبَانَ.
Translation
✧ The Expedition of Safawān (the First Expedition of Badr) [The raid of Kurz and the going out in pursuit of him] Ibn Isḥāq said: The Messenger of God ﷺ did not stay in Madinah when he arrived from the Expedition of al-ʿUshayrah except a few nights, not reaching ten. Ibn Ḥazm said: ten days after it, the Messenger of God ﷺ went out in Rabīʿ al-Awwal, at the beginning of thirteen months from his emigration, in pursuit of Kurz b. Jābir al-Fihrī, because of his raid on the pasturing camels of Madinah, which were grazing at al-Jammāʾ and its environs. His banner ﷺ was carried by ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib ؓ, and it was white. He appointed Zayd b. Ḥārithah as his deputy over Madinah, and he ﷺ sought Kurz. Ibn Isḥāq said: until he reached a valley called Safawān, on the side of Badr, but Kurz b. Jābir eluded him and he did not catch him. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ returned to Madinah and stayed there for the rest of Jumādā al-Ākhirah, Rajab, and Shaʿbān.
