The Expedition of al-Abwāʾ (Waddān)
غَزْوَةُ الْأَبْوَاءِ (وَدَّانَ) هِيَ أُولَى غَزَوَاتِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَكَانَتْ فِي السَّنَةِ الثَّانِيَةِ مِنَ الْهِجْرَةِ فَخَرَجَ يَعْتَرِضُ عِيرًا لِقُرَيْشٍ وَاسْتَعْمَلَ عَلَى الْمَدِينَةِ سَعْدَ بْنَ عُبَادَةَ، وَخَرَجَ بِالْمُهَاجِرِينَ لَيْسَ فِيهِ أَنْصَارِيٌّ، وَفِي هَذِهِ الْغَزْوَةِ وَادَعَتْهُ بَنُو ضَمْرَةَ وَادَعَهُ مِنْهُمْ مَخْشِيُّ بْنُ عَمْرٍو الضَّمْرِيُّ، وَكَانَ سَيِّدَهُمْ فِي زَمَانِهِ ذَلِكَ. وَادَعَتْهُ بَنُو ضَمْرَةَ عَلَى أَلَّا يَغْزُوَ بَنِي ضَمْرَةَ، وَلَا يَغْزُوَهُ، وَلَا أَنْ يُكَثِّرُوا عَلَيْهِ جَمْعًا، وَلَا يُعِينُوا عَلَيْهِ عَدُوًّا، وَكَتَبَ بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَهُمْ كِتَابًا. وَعَادَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ إِلَى الْمَدِينَةِ وَلَمْ يَلْقَ كَيْدًا وَلِلَّهِ الْحَمْدُ.
Translation
✧ The Expedition of al-Abwāʾ (Waddān) It is the first expedition of the Prophet ﷺ and it took place in the second year of the Hijrah. He went out to intercept a caravan belonging to Quraysh. He appointed Saʿd b. ʿUbādah over Madinah as his deputy, and he set out with the Muhājirūn, there being no Anṣārī among them. In this expedition, Banū Ḍamrah made a treaty with him; Makhshī b. ʿAmr al-Ḍamrī made a treaty with him on their behalf, and he was their chief at that time. Banū Ḍamrah made a treaty with him on the condition that he would not raid Banū Ḍamrah, nor would they raid him, nor would they join others in gathering forces against him, nor aid any enemy against him. And he wrote a document between himself and them. The Prophet ﷺ returned to Madinah without encountering any hostilities, and praise be to Allah.
