The Beginning of Fighting the Polytheists and the Expeditions, Missions, and Detachments of the Messenger of God ﷺ
بَدْءُ قِتَالِ الْمُشْرِكِينَ وَغَزَوَاتُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَبُعُوثُهُ وَسَرَايَاهُ بَعْدَ هِجْرَتِهِ ﷺ أَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى الْإِذْنَ بِالْقِتَالِ وَذَلِكَ فِي قَوْلِهِ تَعَالَى: أُذِنَ لِلَّذِينَ يُقَاتَلُونَ بِأَنَّهُمْ ظُلِمُوا وَإِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلَى نَصْرِهِمْ لَقَدِيرٌ فَبَدَأَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ مُنْذُ نُزُولِ الْآيَةِ بِالْقِتَالِ فَكَانَ أَوَّلُ غَزَوَاتِهِ غَزْوَةُ الْأَبْوَاءِ ثُمَّ بُوَاطٌ ثُمَّ الْعُشَيْرَةُ. فَبَلَغَتْ عَدَدُ غَزَوَاتِهِ ﷺ قُرَابَةُ تِسْعَةَ عَشَرَ شَهِدَ مِنْهَا سَبْعَةَ عَشَرَ.
Translation
✧ The Beginning of Fighting the Polytheists and the Expeditions, Missions, and Detachments of the Messenger of God ﷺ After his emigration ﷺ, God Almighty sent down the permission to fight, and that is in His saying, Exalted is He: “Permission [to fight] has been given to those who are being fought, because they were wronged. And indeed, Allah is competent to give them victory.” So the Prophet ﷺ began fighting from the time the verse was sent down. His first expedition was the expedition of al-Abwāʾ, then Buwāṭ, then al-ʿUshayrah. The number of his expeditions ﷺ reached about nineteen, of which he personally witnessed seventeen.
