Translation
✧ The Story of the Prophet of Allah Hūd ﷺ He is Hūd b. Shālakh b. Arfakhshad b. Sām b. Nūḥ ﷺ, though another lineage is also mentioned. Allah sent Hūd ﷺ to his people, the first ʿĀd. They were tyrannical and tall in stature, with no one like them. They were Arabs who dwelt in al-Aḥqāf, which are sand mountains, and it was in Yemen, between ʿUmān and Ḥaḍramawt. They were the first to worship idols after the Flood. They were coarse disbelievers, insolent and rebellious. Hūd called them to worship Allah alone and to abandon the polytheism they were upon, but their only response was to turn away and to call their prophet foolish. When they demanded a clear proof, he established against them the decisive argument that their idols neither benefit nor harm nor possess anything. Then he made them witnesses to what proves their incapacity and the incapacity of the idols, saying: "I call Allah to witness, and you bear witness, that I am free from what you associate with Him. So scheme against me, all of you, and give me no respite" [Hūd: 54–55]. Meaning: do not delay me for a single hour or the blink of an eye, for I do not care about you, nor do I think of you, nor do I look to you. I have put my trust in Allah, my Lord and your Lord. There is no creature but He holds its forelock. Indeed, my Lord is on a straight path. When they persisted in their falsehood, he said: "My Lord, help me because they deny me." He said: "After a little while they will surely become regretful." So the blast seized them in truth, and We made them as dead scum. So away with the wrongdoing people. When the command of Allah, glorified be He, came with His punishment, Allah saved Hūd and those who believed with him. He, glorified be He, said: "We saved Hūd and those who believed with him by a mercy from Us, and We saved them from a severe punishment. And that was ʿĀd: they rejected the signs of their Lord and disobeyed His messengers and followed the command of every obstinate tyrant. And they were pursued in this world with a curse and on the Day of Resurrection. Indeed, ʿĀd disbelieved in their Lord. So away with ʿĀd, the people of Hūd." The first thing that began their punishment was that they were barren and drought-stricken, so they sought rain. They saw a cloud approaching in the sky and thought it was rain of mercy, but it was rain of punishment. When they wanted to pray for rain, they would go to the Sanctuary and call upon Allah, and He would give them rain. So they sent a delegation to the Sanctuary, and they prayed. Allah then produced three clouds: white, red, and black. Then a caller from heaven called out: "Choose for yourself and your people from these clouds." The man said: "I choose the black cloud, for it has the most water." A caller called out: "You have chosen ashes, utterly destructive, leaving none of ʿĀd alive." And Allah sent upon them a howling wind in days of ill fortune, and it was as Allah, exalted be He, informed in His Book: it destroyed everything by the command of its Lord, and it left nothing upon which it came but made it like disintegrated ruins. Then Allah, exalted be He, took Hūd in death at the age of one hundred and fifty years. They differed as to the place of his grave. Some said it is in Yemen, in Ḥaḍramawt; others said it is in the Ḥijr near Makkah; still others mentioned that it is in Damascus. Allah knows best.
