Translation
✧ [The statement of the Jews when the qiblah was turned to the Kaaba] Ibn Isḥāq said: When the qiblah was turned from Syria to the Kaaba, and it was turned in Rajab at the head of seventeen months from the arrival of the Messenger of God ﷺ in al-Madinah, there came to the Messenger of God ﷺ Rifāʿah b. Qays, Qardam b. ʿAmr, Kaʿb b. al-Ashraf, Rāfiʿ b. Abī Rāfiʿ, al-Ḥajjāj b. ʿAmr, the ally of Kaʿb b. al-Ashraf, al-Rabīʿ b. al-Rabīʿ b. Abī al-Ḥuqayq, and Kinānah b. al-Rabīʿ b. Abī al-Ḥuqayq. They said: O Muḥammad, what has turned you away from your qiblah that you were upon, while you claim that you are upon the religion of Abraham and his faith? Return to your qiblah that you were upon, and we will follow you and believe you. By that they only intended to tempt him away from his religion. The disbelievers among the People of the Book know that this is from God, because of what they find in the description of Muḥammad ﷺ in their books, namely that al-Madinah is his place of emigration, and that he will be commanded to face the Kaaba, as He said: “Indeed, those who were given the Scripture know that it is the truth from their Lord” [al-Baqarah: 144]. God, exalted is He, answered them, in addition to all this, regarding their question and their obstinacy, and said: “The foolish among the people will say: What has turned them away from their qiblah, which they were upon? Say: To God belong the east and the west; He guides whom He wills to a straight path. Thus We have made you a middle community, so that you may be witnesses over the people, and the Messenger may be a witness over you. And We did not make the qiblah which you were upon except that We might know who follows the Messenger from him who turns back on his heels” — that is, as a trial and a test — “and indeed, it was a great thing except for those whom God has guided” — that is, among the trials — “that is, those whom God has made firm. And God would not cause your faith to be lost” — that is, your faith in the first qiblah, your belief in your Prophet, and your following him to the other qiblah, and your obedience to your Prophet in it — “that is, He will surely give you the reward of both of them. Indeed, God is to people Kind and Merciful.” Then He, exalted is He, said: “We have seen the turning of your face toward the heaven, so We will surely turn you to a qiblah that pleases you. So turn your face toward the Sacred Mosque. And wherever you are, turn your faces toward it.” 30 “Indeed, those who were given the Scripture know that it is the truth from their Lord. And God is not unaware of what they do. And if you should bring to those who were given the Scripture every sign, they will not follow your qiblah, nor will you follow their qiblah, nor will some of them follow the qiblah of others. And if you should follow their desires after what has come to you of knowledge, indeed, you would then be among the wrongdoers.” Ibn Isḥāq said: Up to His, exalted is He, saying: “the truth from your Lord, so do not be among the doubters.”
