Some matters that occurred between the Messenger ﷺ and the Jews, Christians, and hypocrites in al-Madinah al-Munawwarah
وَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ صَيْفٍ، وَعَدِيُّ بْنُ زَيْدٍ، وَالْحَارِثُ بْنُ عَوْفٍ، بَعْضُهُمْ لِبَعْضٍ: تَعَالَوْا نُؤْمِنْ بِمَا أُنْزِلَ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَأَصْحَابِهِ غُدْوَةً، وَنَكْفُرْ بِهِ عَشِيَّةً، حَتَّى نَلْبِسَ عَلَيْهِمْ دِينَهُمْ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَصْنَعُونَ كَمَا نَصْنَعُ، وَيَرْجِعُونَ عَنْ دِينِهِ. فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى فِيهِمْ: يَا أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ لِمَ تَلْبِسُونَ الْحَقَّ بِالْبَاطِلِ وَتَكْتُمُونَ الْحَقَّ وَأَنْتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ وَقَالَتْ طَائِفَةٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ آمِنُوا بِالَّذِي أُنْزِلَ عَلَى الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَجْهَ النَّهَارِ وَاكْفُرُوا آخِرَهُ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْجِعُونَ وَلَا تُؤْمِنُوا إِلَّا لِمَنْ تَبِعَ دِينَكُمْ قُلْ إِنَّ الْهُدَى هُدَى اللَّهِ أَنْ يُؤْتَى أَحَدٌ مِثْلَ مَا أُوتِيتُمْ أَوْ يُحَاجُّوكُمْ عِنْدَ رَبِّكُمْ قُلْ إِنَّ الْفَضْلَ بِيَدِ اللَّهِ يُؤْتِيهِ مَنْ يَشَاءُ وَاللَّهُ وَاسِعٌ عَلِيمٌ
Translation
✧ ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṣayf, ʿAdī b. Zayd, and al-Ḥārith b. ʿAwf said to one another: "Come, let us believe in what was sent down upon Muḥammad and his companions in the morning, and disbelieve in it in the evening, so that we may confound their religion for them, perhaps they will do as we do and turn back from their religion." Then God, exalted is He, revealed concerning them: "O People of the Scripture, why do you confuse the truth with falsehood and conceal the truth while you know?" And a party of the People of the Scripture said: "Believe in what was sent down upon those who believe at the beginning of the day and disbelieve at its end, perhaps they will turn back. And do not believe except in those who follow your religion." Say: "Indeed, guidance is the guidance of God—that anyone should be given the like of what you were given, or that they should dispute with you before your Lord." Say: "Indeed, bounty is in the hand of God; He gives it to whom He wills. And God is all-encompassing, all-knowing."
