Translation
✧ [Their Claim That They Are upon the Truth] Rāfiʿ b. Ḥārithah, Sallām b. Mishkam, Mālik b. al-Ṣayf, and Rāfiʿ b. Ḥuraymilah came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and said: “O Muḥammad, do you not claim that you are upon the religion of Abraham and his faith, and that you believe in what we have of the Torah, and that you bear witness that it is truly from God?” He said: “Yes, but you have introduced innovations and denied what is in it concerning the covenant God took from you regarding it, and you have concealed from it what you were commanded to make clear to the people. I am quit of your innovations.” They said: “Then we hold to what is in our hands, for we are upon guidance and truth, and we will not believe in you or follow you.” Then God, exalted is He, revealed concerning them: “Say: O People of the Scripture, you are not [standing] on anything until you uphold the Torah and the Gospel and what was sent down to you from your Lord. But that which has been sent down to you from your Lord will surely increase many of them in transgression and disbelief. So grieve not over the disbelieving people.” [Ibn Ṣūriyā’s asking the Prophet ﷺ to become Jewish] ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṣūriyā al-Aʿwar al-Faṭyūnī said to the Messenger of God ﷺ: “Guidance is nothing other than what we are upon, so follow us, O Muḥammad, and you will be guided.” And the Christians said the like of that. Then God, exalted is He, revealed concerning that, from the saying of ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṣūriyā and what the Christians said: “And they say: ‘Be Jews or Christians, and you will be guided.’ Say: ‘Rather, the religion of Abraham, a ḥanīf, and he was not of the polytheists.’” Then the account continues to the saying of God, exalted is He: “That was a community which has passed away. To it belongs what it earned, and to you belongs what you have earned, and you will not be asked about what they used to do.”
