Some matters that occurred between the Messenger ﷺ and the Jews, Christians, and hypocrites in al-Madinah al-Munawwarah
[ مَا نَزَلَ فِي طَلَبِ ابْنِ حُرَيْمِلَةَ أَنْ يُكَلِّمَهُ اللَّهُ ] قَالَ ابْنُ إسْحَاقَ: وَقَالَ رَافِعُ بْنُ حُرَيْمِلَةَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ: يَا مُحَمَّدُ، إنْ كُنْتَ رَسُولًا مِنْ اللَّهِ كَمَا تَقُولُ، فَقُلْ لِلَّهِ فَلْيُكَلِّمْنَا حَتَّى نَسْمَعَ كَلَامَهُ. فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى فِي ذَلِكَ مِنْ قَوْلِهِ: وَقَالَ الَّذِينَ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ لَوْلَا يُكَلِّمُنَا اللَّهُ أَوْ تَأْتِينَا آيَةٌ كَذَلِكَ قَالَ الَّذِينَ مِنْ قَبْلِهِمْ مِثْلَ قَوْلِهِمْ تَشَابَهَتْ قُلُوبُهُمْ قَدْ بَيَّنَّا الْآيَاتِ لِقَوْمٍ يُوقِنُونَ [ مَا نَزَلَ فِي قَوْلِ ابْنِ حُرَيْمِلَةَ وَوَهْبٍ ] وَقَالَ رَافِعُ بْنُ حُرَيْمِلَةَ، وَوَهْبُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ: يَا مُحَمَّدُ، ائْتِنَا بِكِتَابٍ تُنَزِّلُهُ عَلَيْنَا مِنْ السَّمَاءِ نَقْرَؤُهُ، وَفَجِّرْ لَنَا أَنَهَارًا نَتَّبِعْكَ وَنُصَدِّقْكَ. فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى فِي ذَلِكَ مِنْ قَوْلِهِمَا: أَمْ تُرِيدُونَ أَنْ تَسْأَلُوا رَسُولَكُمْ كَمَا سُئِلَ مُوسَى مِنْ قَبْلُ وَمَنْ يَتَبَدَّلِ الْكُفْرَ بِالْإِيمَانِ فَقَدْ ضَلَّ سَوَاءَ السَّبِيلِ
Translation
✧ [ What was revealed regarding the request of Ibn Ḥuraymilah that Allah should speak to him ] Ibn Isḥāq said: Rāfiʿ b. Ḥuraymilah said to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: O Muḥammad, if you are a messenger from Allah as you say, then tell Allah to speak to us so that we may hear His speech. So Allah, Exalted is He, revealed concerning that, of His saying: And those who do not know said, “Why does Allah not speak to us or a sign come to us?” Thus said those before them, a saying like theirs. Their hearts are alike. We have made clear the signs for a people who are certain. [ What was revealed regarding the statement of Ibn Ḥuraymilah and Wahb ] Rāfiʿ b. Ḥuraymilah and Wahb b. Zayd said to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: O Muḥammad, bring us a book that you send down upon us from the sky that we may read it, and cause rivers to gush forth for us, and we will follow you and believe you. So Allah, Exalted is He, revealed concerning that, of their statement: Or do you wish to ask your Messenger as Moses was asked before? And whoever exchanges disbelief for faith has certainly strayed from the sound path.
