The Prophet's emigration ﷺ
Translation
✧ Ibn Isḥāq said: When the Messenger of God ﷺ became settled in Madinah, and his brothers among the Emigrants had gathered to him, and the affair of the Anṣār had come together, the affair of Islam became firmly established. The prayer was instituted, and the zakāt and fasting were made obligatory, and the prescribed punishments were put in place, and the lawful and the unlawful were ordained, and Islam took up its abode among them. It was this clan of the Anṣār who had taken up the abode and the faith. When the Messenger of God ﷺ first arrived there, the people would simply gather to him for prayer at its appointed times, without any summons. The Messenger of God ﷺ considered making a horn like the horn of the Jews with which they called to their prayer, but then he disliked it. Then he ordered a clapper, so one was carved for him to strike for the Muslims to call them to prayer. While they were in that state, ʿAbd Allāh b. Zayd b. Thaʿlabah b. ʿAbd Rabbih, the brother of Balḥārith b. al-Khazraj, saw the call in a dream. He came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and said: O Messenger of God, a visitor came to me this night. A man passed by me wearing two green garments and carrying a clapper in his hand. I said: O servant of God, will you sell this clapper? He said: What will you do with it? I said: We will call to prayer with it. He said: Shall I not direct you to something better than that? I said: What is it? He said: You say: God is most great, God is most great, God is most great, God is most great. I bear witness that there is no god but God, I bear witness that there is no god but God. I bear witness that Muḥammad is the Messenger of God, I bear witness that Muḥammad is the Messenger of God. Come to prayer, come to prayer. Come to success, come to success. God is most great, God is most great. There is no god but God. When he told this to the Messenger of God ﷺ, he said: "It is a true vision, if God wills. Go with Bilāl and teach it to him, and let him call the adhān with it, for he has a clearer voice than you." So when Bilāl called the adhān with it, ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb heard him while he was in his house. He came out to the Messenger of God ﷺ dragging his cloak, saying: O Prophet of God, by the One who sent you with the truth, I have seen the like of what he saw. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "So praise belongs to God." According to Abū Dāwūd, he also taught him the iqāmah. He said: Then when you establish the prayer, you say: God is most great, God is most great. I bear witness that there is no god but God. I bear witness that Muḥammad is the Messenger of God. Come to prayer, come to success. The prayer is established, the prayer is established. God is most great, God is most great. There is no god but God. Abū ʿUbayd said: Abū Bakr al-Ḥakamī informed me that ʿAbd Allāh b. Zayd al-Anṣārī said concerning that: I praise God, Possessor of majesty and generosity, with abundant praise for the adhān When the bearer of good tidings from God came to me with it So how honored he is in my sight as a bearer of good tidings In nights in which he came successively, three in a row Each time he came, he increased me in reverence. I say: This poetry is uncommon, and it indicates that he saw that for three nights until he reported it to the Messenger of God ﷺ. God knows best. Al-Zuhrī said: Bilāl added to the call of the dawn prayer: "Prayer is better than sleep," twice, and the Messenger of God ﷺ approved it.
