The Prophet's emigration ﷺ
[أَمْرُهُ ﷺ بِصِيَامِ عَاشُورَاءَ] وَفِي هَذِهِ السَّنَةِ: وَجَدَ الْيَهُودَ تَصُومُ عَاشُورَاءَ. أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحَسَنِ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ النَّيْسَابُورِيُّ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سُفْيَانَ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا مُسْلِمُ بْنُ الْحَجَّاجِ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ: أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَدِمَ الْمَدِينَةَ فَوَجَدَ الْيَهُودَ صِيَامًا يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ، فَقَالَ لَهُمْ: "مَا هَذَا الْيَوْمُ الَّذِي تَصُومُونَهُ؟" قَالُوا: هَذَا يَوْمٌ عَظِيمٌ، نَجَّى اللَّهُ فِيهِ مُوسَى وَقَوْمَهُ مِنْ فِرْعَوْنَ، وَأَغْرَقَ فِرْعَوْنَ وَقَوْمَهُ فَصَامَهُ مُوسَى شُكْرًا، فَنَحْنُ نَصُومُهُ. فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: "فَنَحْنُ أَحَقُّ وَأَوْلَى بِمُوسَى مِنْكُمْ" فَصَامَهُ وَأَمَرَ بِصِيَامِهِ . أَخْرَجَاهُ فِي الصَّحِيحَيْنِ.
Translation
✧ [His command ﷺ to fast ʿĀshūrāʾ] In this year: he found the Jews fasting ʿĀshūrāʾ. Abū al-Ḥasan al-Anṣārī informed us, saying: ʿAlī b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Naysābūrī informed us, saying: Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad b. Sufyān informed us, saying: Muslim b. al-Ḥajjāj informed us, saying: Ibn Abī Sufyān narrated to us, from Ayyūb, from ʿAbd Allāh b. Saʿīd b. Jubayr, from his father, from Ibn ʿAbbās: that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to Madinah and found the Jews fasting on the day of ʿĀshūrāʾ. He said to them, "What is this day that you fast?" They said, "This is a great day on which Allah saved Moses and his people from Pharaoh and drowned Pharaoh and his people. Moses fasted it out of gratitude, so we fast it." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "We are more entitled and closer to Moses than you." So he fasted it and commanded its fasting. They both narrated it in the two Ṣaḥīḥs.
