✧ The Story of the Idol of ʿAmr b. al-Jamūḥ [The aggression of ʿAmr’s people against his idol] When they arrived in Madinah, they openly professed Islam there, while among their people there remained some of their elders upon their religion of polytheism. Among them was ʿAmr b. al-Jamūḥ b. Zayd b. Ḥarām b. Kaʿb b. Ghanm b. Kaʿb b. Salamah. His son Muʿādh b. ʿAmr had been present at al-ʿAqabah and had given allegiance to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ there. ʿAmr b. al-Jamūḥ was a chief among the chiefs of Banū Salimah and a noble among their nobles. He had taken for himself in his house an idol of wood called Manāt, as the nobles used to make; he took it as a god, venerating it and purifying it. When the young men of Banū Salimah accepted Islam—Muʿādh b. Jabal, his son Muʿādh b. ʿAmr (b. al-Jamūḥ), among young men of theirs who had accepted Islam and been present at al-ʿAqabah—they would go out by night to that idol of ʿAmr, carry it off, and cast it into one of the pits of Banū Salimah, in which were people’s filth, turned upside down on its head. When morning came, ʿAmr would say: “Woe to you! Who transgressed against our god this night?” Then he would go out seeking it until he found it, washed it, purified it, and perfumed it, then said: “By Allah, if I knew who did this to you, I would disgrace him.” When evening came and ʿAmr slept, they would assault it and do the like to it. He would go out in the morning and find it in the like of its previous state of harm, so he would wash it, purify it, and perfume it. Then they would assault it when evening came and do the like to it. When they did this to him repeatedly, he took it out one day from where they had thrown it, washed it, purified it, and perfumed it, then brought his sword and hung it on it, and said: “By Allah, I do not know who does to you what you see. If there is any good in you, defend yourself; here is the sword with you.” When evening came and ʿAmr slept, they assaulted it, took the sword from its neck, then took a dead dog and tied it to it with a rope, then cast it into a well among the wells of Banū Salimah, in which was some of people’s filth. Then ʿAmr b. al-Jamūḥ went out in the morning and did not find it in the place where it had been. [The Islam of ʿAmr and his poetry about that] He went out following it until he found it in that well, turned upside down, tied to a dead dog. When he saw it and observed its condition, and those of his people who had accepted Islam spoke to him, he accepted Islam by the mercy of Allah, and his Islam became good. When he accepted Islam and came to know of Allah what he came to know, he said—remembering that idol of his and what he had seen of its affair, and thanking Allah Almighty who had rescued him from the blindness and misguidance in which he had been: : By Allah, if you were a god, you would not be—you and a dog—in the middle of a well, tied together. Ugh for your abode as a god, contemptible! Now we have examined you to reveal the evil of loss. Praise be to Allah, the Exalted, the Possessor of favors, the Giver, the Provider, the Judge of judgment. He is the one who rescued me before I could be in the darkness of a grave, held in pledge, through Aḥmad, the guided one, the prophet, the one held in pledge.
