Translation
✧ The second pledge of al-Aqabah and what occurred therein: When the year following the first pledge of al-Aqabah came, a number of the Muslim Anṣār came in the caravan of their people during the pilgrimage season. They had covenanted with the Prophet ﷺ to meet him and to propose to him that he emigrate to them, and that they would protect him and support him out of love and honor for God, glorified be He, and for His Messenger ﷺ. They gathered, and al-ʿAbbās b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib spoke while he was then a polytheist, but he was a trusted man. He wanted to be certain of the people's resolve to support the Prophet ﷺ if he went to them. The Anṣār said: O Messenger of God, take for your Lord and for yourself what you will. So the Prophet ﷺ took their pledge upon hearing and obedience in activity and in slackness, upon spending in hardship and in ease, upon commanding the right and forbidding the wrong, and upon protecting him when he came to them from that from which they protected themselves, their wealth, and their children, and for them would be Paradise. So they pledged allegiance to him ﷺ. There is disagreement about the first to pledge allegiance. Some people said Asʿad b. Zurārah; others said al-Barāʾ b. Maʿrūr; others said al-Haytham b. al-Tayyihān, and God knows best. When the pledge was completed, Satan cried out and informed of what had happened. When Quraysh awoke, they came to the Anṣār, among whom were the polytheists, and mentioned to them what they had learned, namely that they had agreed to support the Prophet ﷺ. Then some of the polytheists of the people of Madinah broke forth swearing that this had not occurred. They were truthful, for they did not know, and the Muslims remained silent. Then Quraysh learned of what had happened, and they seized Saʿd b. ʿUbādah and tortured him, but God rescued him and he returned to his people. During that time, ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr b. Ḥarām embraced Islam, and he was one of the twelve chiefs. The number of those who witnessed the second pledge of al-Aqabah reached seventy-three men and two women. When the Muslims returned to Madinah, they became active in calling to God, exalted be He, and Islam spread throughout the homes of the Anṣār until ʿAmr b. al-Jamūḥ ؓ embraced Islam, and he was a chief among the chiefs of his people.
