The first pledge of al-Aqabah and the beginning of the Ansar's entry into Islam
[ أَسَمَاءُ الرَّهْطِ الْخَزْرَجِيِّينَ الَّذِينَ الْتَقَوْا بِالرَّسُولِ عِنْدَ الْعَقَبَةِ ] قَالَ ابْنُ إسْحَاقَ: وَهُمْ - فِيمَا ذُكِرَ لِي -: سِتَّةُ نَفَرٍ مِنْ الْخَزْرَجِ، مِنْهُمْ مِنْ بَنِي النَّجَّارِ - وَهُوَ تَيْمُ اللَّهِ - ثُمَّ مِنْ بَنِي مَالِكِ بْنِ النَّجَّارِ بْنِ ثَعْلَبَةَ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْخَزْرَجِ بْنِ حَارِثَةَ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ عَامِرٍ: أَسْعَدُ بْنُ زُرَارَةَ بْنِ عُدَسَ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ بْنِ ثَعْلَبَةَ بْنِ غَنْمِ بْنِ مَالِكِ بْنِ النَّجَّارِ، وَهُوَ أَبُو أُمَامَةَ، وَعَوْفُ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ رِفَاعَةَ بْنِ سَوَادِ بْنِ مَالِكِ بْنِ غَنْمِ بْنِ مَالِكِ بْنِ النَّجَّارِ، وَهُوَ ابْنُ عَفْرَاءَ. قَالَ ابْنُ هِشَامٍ: وَعَفْرَاءُ بِنْتُ عُبَيْدِ بْنِ ثَعْلَبَةَ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ بْنِ ثَعْلَبَةَ بْنِ غَنْمِ بْنِ مَالِكِ بْنِ النَّجَّارِ. قَالَ ابْنُ إسْحَاقَ: وَمِنْ بَنِي زُرَيْقِ بْنِ عَامِرِ بْنِ زُرَيْقِ بْنِ عَبْدِ حَارِثَةَ بْنِ مَالِكِ بْنِ غَضْبِ بْنِ جُشَمَ بْنِ الْخَزْرَجِ: رَافِعُ بْنُ مَالِكِ بْنِ الْعَجْلَانِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ عَامِرِ بْنِ زُرَيْقٍ. قَالَ ابْنُ هِشَامٍ: وَيُقَالُ: عَامِرُ بْنُ الْأَزْرَقِ. قَالَ ابْنُ إسْحَاقَ: وَمِنْ بَنِي سَلِمَةَ بْنِ سَعْدِ بْنِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ سَارِدَةَ بْنِ تَزِيدَ بْنِ جُشَمَ بْنِ الْخَزْرَجِ، ثُمَّ مِنْ بَنِي سَوَادِ بْنِ غَنْمِ بْنِ كَعْبِ بْنِ سَلَمَةَ: قُطْبَةُ بْنُ عَامِرِ بْنِ حَدِيدَةَ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ غَنْمِ بْنِ سَوَادِ. قَالَ ابْنُ هِشَامٍ: عَمْرُو بْنُ سَوَادٍ، وَلَيْسَ لِسَوَادٍ ابْنٌ يُقَالُ لَهُ: غَنْمٌ. قَالَ ابْنُ إسْحَاقَ: وَمِنْ بَنِي حَرَامِ بْنِ كَعْبِ بْنِ غَنْمِ بْنِ كَعْبِ بْنِ سَلَمَةَ عُقْبَةُ بْنُ عَامِرِ بْنِ نَابِي بْنِ زَيْدِ بْنِ حَرَامٍ. وَمِنْ بَنِي عُبَيْدِ بْنِ عَدِيِّ بْنِ غَنْمِ بْنِ كَعْبِ بْنِ سَلَمَةَ: جَابِرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ رِئَابِ بْنِ النُّعْمَانِ بْنِ سِنَانِ بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ. فَلَمَّا قَدِمُوا الْمَدِينَةَ إلَى قَوْمِهِمْ ذَكَرُوا لَهُمْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَدَعَوْهُمْ إلَى الْإِسْلَامِ حَتَّى فَشَا فِيهِمْ، فَلَمْ يَبْقَ دَارٌ مِنْ دُورِ الْأَنْصَارِ إلَّا وَفِيهَا ذِكْرٌ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ. وَذَكَرَ مُوسَى بْنُ عُقْبَةَ فِيمَا رَوَاهُ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ وَعُرْوَةَ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ، أَنَّ أَوَّلَ اجْتِمَاعِهِ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ بِهِمْ كَانُوا ثَمَانِيَةً.
Translation
✧ [The names of the Khazrajī group who met the Messenger at al-ʿAqabah] Ibn Isḥāq said: They were—as was mentioned to me—six men from the Khazraj. Among them, from the Banū al-Najjār—who is Taym Allāh—then from the Banū Mālik b. al-Najjār b. Thaʿlabah b. ʿAmr b. al-Khazraj b. Ḥārithah b. ʿAmr b. ʿĀmir: Asʿad b. Zurārah b. ʿUdas b. ʿUbayd b. Thaʿlabah b. Ghanm b. Mālik b. al-Najjār, who is Abū Umāmah; and ʿAwf b. al-Ḥārith b. Rifāʿah b. Sawād b. Mālik b. Ghanm b. Mālik b. al-Najjār, who is Ibn ʿAfrāʾ. Ibn Hishām said: ʿAfrāʾ is the daughter of ʿUbayd b. Thaʿlabah b. ʿUbayd b. Thaʿlabah b. Ghanm b. Mālik b. al-Najjār. Ibn Isḥāq said: And from the Banū Zurayq b. ʿĀmir b. Zurayq b. ʿAbd Ḥārithah b. Mālik b. Ghaḍb b. Jusham b. al-Khazraj: Rāfiʿ b. Mālik b. al-ʿAjlān b. ʿAmr b. ʿĀmir b. Zurayq. Ibn Hishām said: It is also said: ʿĀmir b. al-Azraq. Ibn Isḥāq said: And from the Banū Salimah b. Saʿd b. ʿAlī b. Sāridah b. Tazīd b. Jusham b. al-Khazraj, then from the Banū Sawād b. Ghanm b. Kaʿb b. Salamah: Quṭbah b. ʿĀmir b. Ḥadīdah b. ʿAmr b. Ghanm b. Sawād. Ibn Hishām said: ʿAmr b. Sawād, and Sawād has no son called Ghanm. Ibn Isḥāq said: And from the Banū Ḥarām b. Kaʿb b. Ghanm b. Kaʿb b. Salamah: ʿUqbah b. ʿĀmir b. Nābī b. Zayd b. Ḥarām. And from the Banū ʿUbayd b. ʿAdī b. Ghanm b. Kaʿb b. Salamah: Jābir b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Riʾāb b. al-Nuʿmān b. Sinān b. ʿUbayd. When they came to Madinah to their people, they mentioned to them the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and called them to Islam until it spread among them, so that there remained no house among the houses of the Anṣār but that it contained mention of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Mūsā b. ʿUqbah mentioned, in what he narrated from al-Zuhrī and ʿUrwah b. al-Zubayr, that the first meeting of him ﷺ with them consisted of eight.
