The first pledge of al-Aqabah and the beginning of the Ansar's entry into Islam

Translation

✧ The beginning of the Anṣār's entry into Islam [The Messenger of Allah and a party from the Khazraj at al-ʿAqabah] Ibn Isḥāq said: When Allah, Mighty and Majestic, willed to manifest His religion, to strengthen His Prophet ﷺ, and to fulfil His promise to him, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out in the pilgrimage season in which the group of the Anṣār met him. He presented himself to the tribes of the Arabs as he used to do in every season. While he was at al-ʿAqabah, he met a party from the Khazraj whom Allah intended for good. Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿĀṣim b. ʿUmar b. Qatādah narrated to me from elders of his people; they said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ met them, he said to them: 'Who are you?' They said: 'A party from the Khazraj.' He said: 'Are you from the allies of the Jews?' They said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Will you not sit down so that I may speak with you?' They said: 'Certainly.' So they sat with him, and he called them to Allah, Mighty and Majestic, presented Islam to them, and recited the Qurʾān to them. He said: Among what Allah did for them in [accepting] Islam was that the Jews were with them in their lands, and they were people of a scripture and knowledge, while they were people of polytheism and idol-worshippers. They had raided them in their lands, and whenever there was something between them, they [the Jews] said to them: 'A prophet will be sent now; his time has drawn near. We shall follow him and kill you with him as ʿĀd and Iram were killed.' So when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ spoke to those men and called them to Allah, they said to one another: 'O people, know by Allah that he is the prophet with whom the Jews threaten you, so do not let them get to him before you.' They responded to what he called them to, by believing him and accepting what he presented to them of Islam. They said: 'We have left our people, and there are no people among whom there is such enmity and evil as among them. Perhaps Allah will unite them through you. We shall go to them and call them to your affair, and present to them this religion to which we have responded to you. If Allah unites them upon it, then there will be no man more honoured than you.' Then they departed from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returning to their lands, having believed and affirmed [the truth].
