The Night Journey and the Ascension
Translation
✧ [The Messenger of Allah’s ﷺ Description of Abraham, Moses, and Jesus] Ibn Isḥāq said: Al-Zuhrī claimed, on the authority of Saʿīd b. al-Musayyib, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ described to his Companions Abraham, Moses, and Jesus when he saw them that night. He said: As for Abraham, I have never seen a man who more resembles your companion, nor does your companion more resemble anyone than him. As for Moses, he is a dark-skinned, tall, lean, curly-haired man with an aquiline nose, as though he were one of the men of Shanūʾah. As for Jesus son of Mary, he is a ruddy man, between short and tall, with lank hair, many moles on his face, as though he had just come out of a bathhouse; you would think his head was dripping with water though there is no water on it. The man among you who most resembles him is ʿUrwah b. Masʿūd al-Thaqafī. While he was traveling, a group of God’s creatures met him and said: Peace be upon you, O first; peace be upon you, O last; peace be upon you, O gatherer. Gabriel said: Return the greeting, so he returned it. Then they met him a second time and said the same to him, then they met him a third time and said the same to him. He said: Who are these, O Gabriel? He said: Abraham, Moses, and Jesus. He passed by Moses while he was praying in his grave at the red sand hill—a tall, lank-haired, dark-skinned man, as though he were one of the men of Shanūʾah—and he was saying, raising his voice: You honored him and favored him. He was brought to him, and he greeted him, and he returned the greeting and said: Who is this with you, O Gabriel? He said: This is Aḥmad. Say: Welcome to the Arab prophet who counseled his community and prayed for blessing for it. And he said: Ask ease for your community. They traveled on, and he said: O Gabriel, who is this? He said: This is Moses son of ʿImrān. He said: And whom is he reproaching? He said: He is reproaching his Lord. He said: Does he raise his voice against his Lord? Gabriel said: God, exalted is He, has recognized his sharpness of temper. Then he passed by a man standing in prayer. He said: Who is this with you, O Gabriel? Gabriel said: This is your brother Muḥammad. He welcomed him and prayed for blessing for him and said: Ask ease for your community. So he said: Who is this, O Gabriel? He said: This is your brother Jesus. And he passed by a tree whose fruit was the lotus, beneath it an old man and his family, and he saw lamps and light. He said: Who is this, O Gabriel? He said: This is your father Abraham; greet him. So he greeted him, and he returned the greeting and said: Who is this with you, O Gabriel? He said: This is your son Aḥmad. He said: Welcome to the Arab prophet who conveyed the message of his Lord and counseled his community. O my son, you will meet your Lord tonight, and your community is the last of the communities and the weakest of them; if you can make your request, or most of it, for your community, then do so.
