The Night Journey and the Ascension
وَبَيْنَا هُوَ يَسِيرُ عَلَى الْبُرَاقِ إِذْ رَأَى عِفْرِيتًا مِنَ الْجِنِّ، يَطْلُبُهُ بِشُعْلَةٍ مِنْ نَارٍ، كُلَّمَا الْتَفَتَ رَآهُ. فَقَالَ لَهُ جِبْرِيلُ: أَلَا أُعَلِّمُكَ كَلِمَاتٍ تَقُولُهُنَّ، فَإِذَا قُلْتَهُنَّ طُفِئَتْ شُعْلَتُهُ وَخَرَّ لَفِيهِ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: بَلَى، فَقَالَ جِبْرِيلُ: «قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِوَجْهِ اللَّهِ الْكَرِيمِ، وَبِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّاتِ الَّتِي لَا يُجَاوِزُهُنَّ بَرٌّ وَلَا فَاجِرٌ، مِنْ شَرِّ مَا يَنْزِلُ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ، وَمِنْ شَرِّ مَا يَعْرُجُ فِيهَا، وَمِنْ شَرِّ مَا ذَرَأَ فِي الْأَرْضِ، وَمِنْ شَرِّ مَا يَخْرُجُ مِنْهَا، وَمِنْ شَرِّ فِتَنِ اللَّيْلِ وَالنَّهَارِ، وَمِنْ طَوَارِقِ اللَّيْلِ وَالنَّهَارِ إِلَّا طَارِقًا يَطْرُقُ بِخَيْرٍ يَا رَحْمَنُ». فَانْكَبَّ لَفِيهِ وَانْطَفَأَتْ شُعْلَتُهُ.
Translation
✧ And while he was riding upon al-Burāq, he saw an ʿifrīt from the jinn pursuing him with a flame of fire; every time he turned, he saw him. Jibrīl said to him: Shall I not teach you words which, if you say them, his flame will be extinguished and he will fall upon his face? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Yes. Jibrīl said: Say: I seek refuge in the noble Face of Allah, and in the perfect words of Allah which no righteous person or sinner can surpass, from the evil of what descends from the sky, and from the evil of what ascends therein, and from the evil of what He has scattered in the earth, and from the evil of what emerges from it, and from the evil of the trials of the night and the day, and from the visitants of the night and the day, except a visitant who comes with good, O Most Merciful. Then he fell upon his face and his flame was extinguished.
