The account of the pact and what occurred in its story and its annulment

Translation

✧ [ What occurred between Hishām and his colleagues and Abū Jahl when they resolved to tear up the document ] They agreed to meet at the foot of al-Ḥajūn at night, on the upper side of Makkah, and they gathered there. They resolved their matter and made a pact to take action regarding the document until they annulled it. Zuhayr said: "I will begin with you, and I shall be the first to speak." When morning came, they went to their assemblies. Zuhayr b. Abī Umayyah went out wearing a fine cloak, circumambulated the House seven times, then turned to the people and said: "O people of Makkah! Shall we eat food and wear clothes while the Banū Hāshim are perishing, with nothing sold to them or bought from them? By God, I will not sit until this document is torn up — the severing and unjust one." Abū Jahl said — and he was in a corner of the mosque: "You lie; by God, it shall not be torn." Zamʿah b. al-Aswad said: "By God, you are the greater liar; we did not approve of its writing when it was written." Abū al-Bakhtarī said: "Zamʿah has spoken the truth; we do not approve of what is written in it, nor do we acknowledge it." Al-Muṭʿim b. ʿAdī said: "You two have spoken the truth, and whoever says otherwise lies. We disavow before God it and what is written in it." Hishām b. ʿAmr said something similar. Then Abū Jahl said: "This is a matter decided at night, deliberated in a place other than this one." He said: And Abū Ṭālib was sitting in a corner of the mosque. Al-Muṭʿim went up to the document to tear it, and found that termites had eaten it, except for the words 'In Your name, O God.' [ The scribe of the document and the paralysis of his hand ] The scribe of the document was Manṣūr b. ʿIkrimah, and his hand became paralyzed, as they claim.
