The account of the pact and what occurred in its story and its annulment
Translation
✧ [ The Assault of Abū Jahl on Ḥakīm b. Ḥizām, and the Intervention of Abū al-Bakhtarī ] It is mentioned that Abū Jahl b. Hishām encountered Ḥakīm b. Ḥizām b. Khuwaylid b. Asad, who had with him a slave carrying wheat intended for his aunt Khadījah bt. Khuwaylid, who was with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the mountain pass. Abū Jahl seized him and said: "Are you taking food to the Banū Hāshim? By Allah, you and your food will not move until I disgrace you in Makkah." Then Abū al-Bakhtarī b. Hāshim b. al-Ḥārith b. Asad came and said: "What is the matter between you and him?" He replied: "He is carrying food to the Banū Hāshim." Abū al-Bakhtarī said to him: "It is food belonging to his aunt, which she had with him and for which she sent to him. Would you prevent him from bringing her own food to her? Let the man go." But Abū Jahl refused, until each of them laid hands on the other. Abū al-Bakhtarī then took up a camel's jawbone and struck him with it, splitting his head open, and trampled him severely. Ḥamzah b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib was nearby, watching this, while they disliked that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his companions should learn of it, lest they gloat over them. Throughout all this, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ continued calling his people night and day, secretly and openly, proclaiming the command of Allah, fearing no one among the people. [ Abū Jahl and What Allah Revealed Regarding Him ] When Allah, mighty and majestic, mentioned the tree of Zaqqūm to frighten them with it, Abū Jahl b. Hishām said: "O assembly of Quraysh, do you know what the tree of Zaqqūm is, with which Muḥammad frightens you?" They said: "No." He said: "It is the pressed dates of Yathrib with butter. By Allah, if we get hold of it, we will certainly gobble it down greedily." So Allah, exalted, revealed concerning him: "Indeed, the tree of Zaqqūm is the food of the sinful, like molten brass boiling in the bellies like the boiling of scalding water" (al-Dukhān 44:43–46), meaning it is not as he says. Ibn Hishām said: al-muhl is everything that one melts, whether copper, lead, or the like, according to what Abū ʿUbaydah informed me.
