What occurred concerning the man from Irash whose payment for his camels Abu Jahl delayed
Translation
✧ [ What Abu Jahl related regarding the reason for his fear of the Messenger ] He said: And the man whom they sent with him came, and they said: "Woe to you! What did you see?" He said: "A wonder among wonders. By God, it was only that he knocked on his door, and he came out to him with his soul barely with him. He said to him: 'Give this man his due.' He said: 'Yes, do not leave until I bring out his due to him.' He entered and then came out to him with his due and gave it to him." He said: Then Abu Jahl did not stay long before he came, and they said to him: "Woe to you! What is the matter with you? By God, we have never seen the like of what you did." He said: "Woe to you! By God, it was only that he knocked on my door, and I heard his voice, and I was filled with terror. Then I went out to him, and above his head was a stallion of camels, the like of whose head, neck, and fangs I have never seen for any stallion. By God, if I had refused, it would have devoured me." [ The humiliation of Abu Jahl before the Messenger ﷺ ] Ibn Ishaq said: The enemy of God, Abu Jahl b. Hisham, despite his enmity toward the Messenger of God ﷺ, his hatred of him, and his harshness toward him, God would humiliate him before him whenever he saw him. Muhammad b. ʿUmar al-Aslamī narrated from Yazīd b. Rūmān, and Abū Nuʿaym from Abū Yazīd al-Madanī, and Abū Farʿah al-Bāhilī, that while the Messenger of God ﷺ was sitting in the mosque with men from his companions, a man from Zubayd approached, saying: "O people of Quraysh, how can supplies be brought to you, or goods be imported to you, or a merchant settle in your courtyard, while you wrong whoever enters upon you in your sanctuary?" He stopped at each circle one by one until he came to the Messenger of God ﷺ among his companions. The Messenger of God ﷺ said to him: "And who has wronged you?" He mentioned that he had arrived with three camels, which were the best of his camels, and Abu Jahl bargained with him for a third of their price, then no one would listen to him about them because of Abu Jahl. Then he said: "So he made my goods unsellable and wronged me." The Messenger of God ﷺ said to him: "And where are your camels?" He said: "They are these at al-Ḥazwarah." The Messenger of God ﷺ stood up, and his companions stood up, and he looked at the camels and saw fine camels. He bargained with the Zubaydī until he reached an agreement that satisfied him. The Messenger of God ﷺ took them and sold two of the camels for the price, and he preferred to sell one camel and gave its price to the widows of Banū ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, while Abu Jahl was sitting in a corner of the market not speaking. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ came to him and said: "O ʿAmr, beware of returning to the like of what you did to this bedouin, lest you see from me what you dislike." He kept saying: "I will not return, O Muhammad; I will not return, O Muhammad." Then the Messenger of God ﷺ departed. Umayyah b. Khalaf and those present approached and said: "You were humbled at the hands of Muhammad. Either you intend to follow him, or terror has entered you from him." He said: "I will never follow him. What you saw from me was because of what I saw with him. I saw men on his right and left with spears, pointing them at me. If I had opposed him, it would have been those very spears—that is, they would have taken my life."
