The account of the pact and what occurred in its story and its annulment
[ سَعْيُ هِشَامٍ فِي ضَمِّ زُهَيْرِ بْنِ أَبِي أُمَيَّةَ لَهُ ] قَالَ ابْنُ إسْحَاقَ: ثُمَّ إنَّهُ مَشَى إلَى زُهَيْرِ بْنِ أَبِي أُمَيَّةَ بْنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ بْنِ مَخْزُومٍ، وَكَانَتْ أُمُّهُ عَاتِكَةَ بِنْتَ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ، فَقَالَ: يَا زُهَيْرُ، أَقَدْ رَضِيتَ أَنْ تَأْكُلَ الطَّعَامَ، وَتَلْبَسَ الثِّيَابَ، وَتَنْكِحَ النِّسَاءَ، وَأَخْوَالُكَ حَيْثُ قَدْ عَلِمْتَ، لَا يُبَاعُونَ وَلَا يُبْتَاعُ مِنْهُمْ، وَلَا يَنْكِحُونَ وَلَا يُنْكَحُ إلَيْهِمْ ؟ أَمَا إنِّي أَحْلِفُ بِاَللَّهِ أَنْ لَوْ كَانُوا أَخْوَالَ أَبِي الْحَكَمِ بْنِ هِشَامٍ، ثُمَّ دَعَوْتَهُ إلَى ( مِثْلِ ) مَا دَعَاكَ إلَيْهِ مِنْهُمْ، مَا أَجَابَكَ إلَيْهِ أَبَدًا؛ قَالَ: وَيْحَكَ يَا هِشَامُ فَمَاذَا أَصْنَعُ ؟ إنَّمَا أَنَا رَجُلٌ وَاحِدٌ، وَاَللَّهِ لَوْ كَانَ مَعِي رَجُلٌ آخَرُ لَقُمْتُ فِي نَقْضِهَا حَتَّى أَنْقُضَهَا، قَالَ: قَدْ وَجَدْتَ رَجُلًا قَالَ: فَمَنْ هُوَ ؟ قَالَ: أَنَا، قَالَ لَهُ زُهَيْرٌ أَبْغِنَا رَجُلًا ثَالِثًا
Translation
✧ [Hishām's efforts to bring Zuhayr b. Abī Umayya over to his side] Ibn Isḥāq said: Then he went to Zuhayr b. Abī Umayya b. al-Mughīra b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar b. Makhzūm, whose mother was ʿĀtika bt. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, and said: "O Zuhayr, are you content to eat food, wear clothes, and marry women while your maternal uncles are in the state you know, not being sold to nor bought from, not marrying nor being married to? By God, I swear that if they were the maternal uncles of Abū al-Ḥakam b. Hishām, and you then called him to the like of what he has called you to regarding them, he would never answer you to it." He said: "Woe to you, O Hishām, what should I do? I am but one man, and by God, if I had another man with me, I would rise to annul it until I annulled it." He said: "You have found a man." He said: "Who is he?" He said: "I." Zuhayr said to him: "Find us a third man."
