What has been narrated about Quraysh's persecution of the believers
Translation
✧ The first to proclaim the Qurʾān aloud [ʿAbd Allāh b. Masʿūd and what befell him from Quraysh for proclaiming the Qurʾān aloud] Ibn Isḥāq said: Yaḥyā b. ʿUrwah b. al-Zubayr narrated to me, from his father, who said: The first to proclaim the Qurʾān aloud after the Messenger of God ﷺ in Makkah was ʿAbd Allāh b. Masʿūd ؓ. He said: One day the Companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ gathered and said: By God, Quraysh have never heard this Qurʾān recited aloud to them. Who is a man who can make them hear it? ʿAbd Allāh b. Masʿūd said: I. They said: We fear them for you. We want a man who has a clan to protect him from the people if they intend him harm. He said: Let me be, for God will protect me. He said: Ibn Masʿūd went out in the morning until he came to the Maqām at forenoon, while Quraysh were in their assemblies, until he stood at the Maqām, then he recited: "In the name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful," raising his voice with it, "The Compassionate taught the Qurʾān." He said: Then he faced them reciting it. He said: They looked at him and began to say: What did Ibn Umm ʿAbd say? He said: Then they said: He is reciting some of what Muḥammad brought. So they rose against him and began striking his face, while he continued to recite until he reached of it what God willed that he reach. Then he departed to his Companions, and they had marked his face. They said to him: This is what we feared for you. He said: God's enemies were never more contemptible to me than they are now, and if you wish, I will go to them with the like of it tomorrow. They said: No, it is enough for you. You have made them hear what they dislike.
