Translation
✧ What has been narrated about Quraysh's persecution of the believers: Indeed, the first to recite the Qurʾān aloud was ʿAbd Allāh b. Masʿūd, and he was severely harmed for that. This was the custom of Quraysh with everyone who made his religion apparent, or of whom they learned that he was upon the religion of Islam. Among those who were harmed were Bilāl b. Rabāḥ, Khabbāb b. al-Aratt, ʿAmmār b. Yāsir, his mother Sumayyah, and his father Yāsir ؓ all together. Sumayyah and Yāsir were martyred, while ʿAmmār remained being tortured. Abū Bakr ؓ attempted to alleviate the suffering of many of the weak among the male and female slaves by purchasing them and freeing them for the sake of God Almighty, and he did not accept the blame of his father regarding that ؓ, and may He be pleased with him.
