Allah's sufficing His Prophet ﷺ against the mockers

[ مُطَالَبَةُ بَنِي مَخْزُومٍ خُزَاعَةَ بِدَمِ أَبِي أُزَيْهِرٍ   ] فَلَمَّا هَلَكَ الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ الْمُغِيرَةِ، وَثَبَتْ بَنُو مَخْزُومٍ عَلَى خُزَاعَةَ يَطْلُبُونَ مِنْهُمْ عَقْلَ الْوَلِيدِ وَقَالُوا: إنَّمَا قَتَلَهُ سَهْمُ صَاحِبِكُمْ - وَكَانَ لِبَنِي كَعْبٍ حِلْفٌ مِنْ بَنِي عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ بْنِ هَاشِمٍ - فَأَبَتْ عَلَيْهِمْ خُزَاعَةُ ذَلِكَ، حَتَّى تَقَاوَلُوا أَشْعَارًا، وَغَلُظَ بَيْنَهُمْ الْأَمْرُ - وَكَانَ الَّذِي أَصَابَ الْوَلِيدَ سَهْمُهُ رَجُلًا مِنْ بَنِي كَعْبِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو، مِنْ خُزَاعَةَ - ✧ The Story of Abū Uzayhir al-Dawsī [The dying instructions of al-Walīd b. al-Mughīrah to his sons] Ibn Isḥāq said: When death came to al-Walīd, he summoned his sons — and they were three: Hishām b. al-Walīd, al-Walīd b. al-Walīd, and Khālid b. al-Walīd — and said to them: My sons, I charge you with three matters, so do not neglect them: my blood in Khuzāʿah — do not let it go unavenged. By Allah, I know that they are innocent of it, but I fear that you may be reviled because of it after today; and my usury in Thaqīf — do not leave it until you take it; and my bride-price with Abū Uzayhir — do not let it escape you. Abū Uzayhir had given him a daughter in marriage, then withheld her from him and did not bring her to him until he died. [The demand of Banū Makhzūm from Khuzāʿah for the blood of al-Walīd] When al-Walīd b. al-Mughīrah perished, Banū Makhzūm fell upon Khuzāʿah, demanding from them the blood-money for al-Walīd. They said: He was only killed by the arrow of your companion — Banū Kaʿb had an alliance with Banū ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib b. Hāshim. Khuzāʿah refused them that, until they exchanged verses and the matter became harsh between them. The one whose arrow struck al-Walīd was a man of Banū Kaʿb b. ʿAmr, of Khuzāʿah. Then ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Umayyah b. al-Mughīrah b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr b. Makhzūm said: : I am a guarantor that you will depart and flee, and that you will leave al-Ẓahrān with its foxes howling, and that you will leave the water at the bend of Aṭriqā. And that you will ask: which of the arāk trees is most pleasant? For we are a people whose blood is not left unavenged, And no one we fight rises ascending. Al-Ẓahrān and al-Arāk were the dwelling-places of Banū Kaʿb, of Khuzāʿah. Then al-Jawn b. Abī al-Jawn, brother of Banū Kaʿb b. ʿAmr al-Khuzāʿī, answered him, saying: : By Allah, we will not give al-Walīd any wrong, not until you see a day when its stars vanish, And one fat man after another of you is struck down, and drinking-places are forcibly opened after death. When you eat your bread and your khaẓīrah, then all of you will be weeping for al-Walīd and wailing for him. Then the people reconciled and realized that the people only feared disgrace. So Khuzāʿah gave them part of the blood-money, and they desisted from the rest. When the people made peace, al-Jawn b. Abī al-Jawn said: : A woman said, when we made peace, in wonder at what we had borne for al-Walīd, and a speaker said: Did you not swear to give al-Walīd a wrong, not until you see a day of many troubles? We have mixed war with peace, and it has become even, so every traveler goes safely to his desire. Then al-Jawn b. Abī al-Jawn did not stop until he boasted of killing al-Walīd and mentioned that they had struck him, though that was false. And there befell al-Walīd, his sons, and his people from that what he had warned against. Al-Jawn b. Abī al-Jawn said: : Did al-Mughīrah claim that Kaʿb in Makkah has among them great worth? Do not boast, Mughīrah, that you see in it the pampered and the well-supplied walking. In it are our fathers, and in it we were born, as Thabīr is fixed in its place. Al-Mughīrah only said that so that he might know our standing or provoke it. The blood of al-Walīd will be left unavenged; indeed we leave unavenged bloods about which you are well informed. The fortunate assassin clothed him with a poisoned arrow while he was full and distressed. He fell in the belly of Makkah, stretched out, as if at his fall he were a camel. The young ones, curly-haired and weak, will suffice me against the delay of Abū Hishām. Ibn Hishām said: We omitted from it one verse in which he spoke obscenely. [The killing of Abū Uzayhir and the uprising of Banū ʿAbd Manāf because of it] Ibn Isḥāq said: Then Hishām b. al-Walīd fell upon Abū Uzayhir — while he was in the market of Dhū al-Majāz; and Abū Sufyān b. Ḥarb had ʿĀtikah bt. Abī Uzayhir as his wife; and Abū Uzayhir was a noble man among his people — and killed him for the bride-price of al-Walīd that was with him, in accordance with his father's instruction to him. That was after the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had emigrated to al-Madīnah and after Badr had passed, and after those of the nobles of Quraysh among the polytheists who were struck had been struck. Then Yazīd b. Abī Sufyān went out and gathered Banū ʿAbd Manāf, while Abū Sufyān was at Dhū al-Majāz. The people said: Abū Sufyān has betrayed his son-in-law, so he is rising because of him. When Abū Sufyān heard what his son Yazīd had done — and Abū Sufyān was a forbearing, disapproving man who loved his people with a great love — he hurried down to Makkah. He feared that there might be an incident among Quraysh concerning Abū Uzayhir. He came to his son while he was in armor, among his people of Banū ʿAbd Manāf and al-Muṭayyibūn, took the spear from his hand, then struck him on the head with it, a blow that knocked him down. Then he said to him: May Allah make you ugly! Do you want to set Quraysh against one another over a man of Daws? We will give them the blood-money if they accept it, and he quenched that matter. Then Ḥassān b. Thābit set out to incite over the blood of Abū Uzayhir, and to shame Abū Sufyān for his betrayal and to call him cowardly. He said: : The people of both sides of Dhū al-Majāz went forth in the morning, while the neighbor of Ibn Ḥarb at al-Mughammas did not go forth. The flatulent ass did not defend his protected one, nor did Hind defend the disgrace of her father. Hishām b. al-Walīd clothed you in his garments, so wear them out and then replace them with new ones. He fulfilled his desire from him and became glorious, while you became soft, neither trotting nor running. If the elders at Badr had witnessed it, a fresh red death would have wet the sandals of the people. When Abū Sufyān heard the words of Ḥassān, he said: Ḥassān wants to set some of us against others over a man of Daws. Evil, by Allah, is what he thought. [The uprising of Daws to avenge Abū Uzayhir, and the account of Umm Ghaylān] There was no vengeance for Abū Uzayhir that we know of until Islam intervened between the people, except that Ḍirār b. al-Khaṭṭāb b. Mirdās al-Fihrī went out with a small band of Quraysh to the land of Daws. They stopped at a woman called Umm Ghaylān, a client of Daws. She used to comb women's hair and prepare brides. Daws wanted to kill them for Abū Uzayhir, but Umm Ghaylān and some women with her stood in their way and protected them. Ḍirār b. al-Khaṭṭāb said about that: : May Allah reward Umm Ghaylān well on our behalf, and her women, when they were disheveled and without ornaments. They warded off death after it had drawn near, when the battlefields had appeared for the avengers. She called Daws with a call, and its ravines flowed with might, and the receiving watercourses delivered it. And ʿAmr — may Allah reward him well — he did not weaken, nor did the joints grow cold in him for me. Then I drew my sword and rose with its blade; for what soul after my own soul shall I fight? Ibn Hishām said: Abū ʿUbaydah related to me that the one who stood in the way of Ḍirār was Umm Jamīl. It is also said Umm Ghaylān. He said: It is possible that Umm Ghaylān stood with Umm Jamīl among those who stood in his way. [Umm Jamīl and ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb] When ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb became caliph, Umm Jamīl came to him, thinking that he was his brother. When she established her lineage to him, he recognized the story and said: I am not his brother except in Islam, and he is away on campaign. I have recognized your favor to him, so he gave her [something] on the basis that she was a wayfarer. [Ḍirār and ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb] The narrator said: Ibn Hishām said: Ḍirār had caught up with ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb on the day of Uḥud. He began striking him with the flat of the spear and saying: Escape, O Ibn al-Khaṭṭāb; I will not kill you. ʿUmar used to acknowledge that for him after his Islam. [Khālid's demand for his father's usury, and what was revealed about that] When the people of al-Ṭāʾif embraced Islam, Khālid b. al-Walīd spoke to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about the usury of al-Walīd that was in Thaqīf, because his father had charged him with it. Ibn Isḥāq said: Some of the people of knowledge mentioned to me that these verses about forbidding what remained of usury in people's hands were revealed because of Khālid's demand for the usury: 'O you who believe, fear Allah and give up what remains of usury, if you are believers' up to the end of the passage about it.
