✧ [Mention of some of the harm with which Umayyah b. Khalaf used to afflict the Messenger of Allah ﷺ] Umayyah b. Khalaf b. Wahb b. Ḥudhāfah b. Jumaḥ, whenever he saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, would backbite him and criticize him. So Allah, Exalted be He, revealed concerning him: “Woe to every backbiter, criticizer, who gathers wealth and counts it, thinking that his wealth will make him immortal. No! He will surely be cast into the crushing Fire. And what will make you know what the crushing Fire is? It is the kindled Fire of Allah, which leaps up over the hearts. Indeed, it will be closed down upon them in extended columns.” Ibn Hishām said: al-humazah is the one who abuses a man openly, narrowing his eyes at him, and winking at him. Ḥassān b. Thābit said: : “I mocked you and you submitted to the humiliation of a soul, with a rhyme that blazes like a flame.” This verse is in an ode of his. Its plural is hamazāt. Al-lumazah is the one who finds fault with people in secret and harms them. Ruʾbah b. al-ʿAjjāj said: : “In the shade of my era are my falsehood and my faultfinding.” This verse is in a long rajaz poem of his, and its plural is lamazāt.
