The Prophet's ﷺ open proclamation to his people and their response
Translation
✧ [Abu Talib's request to the Messenger ﷺ to desist from the call and his reply to him] Ibn Ishaq said: Ya'qub b. 'Utbah b. al-Mughirah b. al-Akhnas related to me that he was told: When Quraysh said these words to Abu Talib, he sent for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said to him: "O son of my brother, your people have come to me and said such-and-such to me, for what they had said to him. So spare me and spare yourself, and do not burden me with what I cannot bear." He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ thought that his uncle had changed his mind about him, that he was going to abandon him and hand him over, and that he had become too weak to help him and stand with him. He said: So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "O uncle, by Allah, if they put the sun in my right hand and the moon in my left, on condition that I abandon this affair until Allah makes it prevail or I perish in it, I would not abandon it." He said: Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ's eyes filled with tears and he wept, then he stood up. When he turned away, Abu Talib called to him and said: "Come back, O son of my brother." He said: So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned to him, and he said: "Go, O son of my brother, and say what you like, for by Allah, I will never hand you over to anything, ever."
