The Prophet's ﷺ open proclamation to his people and their response

Translation

✧ [The Quraysh’s third approach to Abū Ṭālib with ʿUmārah b. al-Walīd al-Makhzūmī] Ibn Isḥāq said: Then when Quraysh knew that Abū Ṭālib had refused to abandon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and to hand him over, and had resolved to part with them over that and to be their enemy, they went to him with ʿUmārah b. al-Walīd b. al-Mughīrah, and said to him — as was reported to me — “O Abū Ṭālib, this is ʿUmārah b. al-Walīd, the strongest and most handsome young man in Quraysh. Take him, and you shall have his mind and his support; adopt him as a son, for he is yours, and hand over to us this nephew of yours, who has opposed your religion and the religion of your forefathers, divided the community of your people, and made fools of their minds, so that we may kill him. For it is only one man for another.” He said: “By Allah, evil is what you demand of me. Would you give me your son that I may feed him for you, and I give you my son that you may kill him? This, by Allah, shall never be.” He said: Then al-Muṭʿim b. ʿAdī b. Nawfal b. ʿAbd Manāf b. Quṣayy said: “By Allah, O Abū Ṭālib, your people have treated you fairly and tried to relieve you of what you dislike, but I do not see that you are willing to accept anything from them.” Abū Ṭālib said to al-Muṭʿim: “By Allah, they have not treated me fairly, but you have resolved to abandon me and assist the people against me, so do what you see fit,” or as he said. Then the matter became grave, war grew hot, the parties renounced one another, and some of them showed open enmity to others. [Abū Ṭālib’s poetry censuring al-Muṭʿim and those of Banū ʿAbd Manāf who failed him] Abū Ṭālib then said, censuring al-Muṭʿim b. ʿAdī, and including generally those of Banū ʿAbd Manāf who failed him and those of the tribes of Quraysh who opposed him, and mentioning what they asked of him and how far their affair had gone: : Say to ʿAmr and al-Walīd and Muṭʿim: would that my share of your protection were a young camel Of the weak ones, a bleating one whose bellowing is frequent, That sprinkles drops of its urine on the two shanks. It lags behind the watering place, never catching up; When it climbs the open desert, it is called a hyrax. I see our two brothers from our father and our mother; When they are asked, they say: “The matter is for others besides us.” Indeed the matter is theirs, but they have recoiled As rock recoils from the head of one with a blood clot. I single out ʿAbd Shams and Nawfal with a special singling out; They have cast us away as a live coal is cast away. They winked at the people concerning their two brothers, So they have become, among them, with empty hands. They shared in glory with one who has no father, Among the people, unless a mention be fastened for him. And Taym, Makhzūm, and Zuhrah are among them; And they were our allies whenever help was sought. By Allah, enmity from us shall never cease, Nor from them, as long as any cutting edge remains of our offspring. Their minds and their intellects have become foolish, And they were like a young camel — evil is what a young camel did. Ibn Hishām said: We omitted two verses from it in which he reviled them obscenely.
