✧ Mention of those Companions who embraced Islam at the call of Abū Bakr ؓ [The Islam of ʿUthmān, al-Zubayr, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, Saʿd, and Ṭalḥa] He said: At his call—according to what has reached me—there embraced Islam ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān b. Abī al-ʿĀṣ b. Umayya b. ʿAbd Shams b. ʿAbd Manāf b. Quṣayy b. Kilāb b. Murra b. Kaʿb b. Luʾayy b. Ghālib; and al-Zubayr b. al-ʿAwwām b. Khuwaylid b. Asad b. ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā b. Quṣayy b. Kilāb b. Murra b. Kaʿb b. Luʾayy; and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf b. ʿAbd ʿAwf b. ʿAbd b. al-Ḥārith b. Zuhra b. Kilāb b. Murra b. Kaʿb b. Luʾayy; and Saʿd b. Abī Waqqāṣ—Abū Waqqāṣ’s name is Mālik b. Uhayb b. ʿAbd Manāf b. Zuhra b. Murra b. Kilāb b. Murra b. Kaʿb b. Luʾayy; and Ṭalḥa b. ʿUbayd Allāh b. ʿUthmān b. ʿAmr b. Kaʿb b. Saʿd b. Taym b. Murra b. Kaʿb b. Luʾayy. He brought them to the Messenger of God ﷺ when they responded to him, and they embraced Islam and prayed. The Messenger of God ﷺ used to say, according to what has reached me: “I have never called anyone to Islam but there was in him, with regard to it, a stumble, a hesitation, and an uncertainty, except what was the case with Abū Bakr b. Abī Quḥāfa; he did not hold back from it when I mentioned it to him, nor did he hesitate about it.” Ibn Hishām said: His statement “at his call” is from other than Ibn Isḥāq. Ibn Hishām said: His statement “ʿakama” means “taraddada” (hesitated, lingered). Ruʾba b. al-ʿAjjāj said: And he turned away, leaping with it, and did not hesitate. Ibn Isḥāq said: These eight persons were the ones who preceded the people in Islam; they prayed and believed the Messenger of God ﷺ in what he brought from God. The Islam of Ṭalḥa b. ʿUbayd Allāh From Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad b. Ṭalḥa, who said: Ṭalḥa b. ʿUbayd Allāh said: I attended the market of Buṣrā, and there was a monk in his cell saying: “Ask the people of the fair: Is there among them a man from the people of the Ḥaram?” Ṭalḥa said: I said, “Yes, I am.” He said, “Has Aḥmad appeared yet?” I said, “Who is Aḥmad?” He said, “The son of ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib. This is the month in which he will emerge. He is the last of the prophets. His place of emergence is the Ḥaram, and his migration will be to a land of palm trees, black stones, and salt flats. Beware lest you be preceded to him.” Ṭalḥa said: What he said fell into my heart, so I left quickly until I arrived in Makkah. I said, “Has there been any news?” They said, “Yes, Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Amīn has claimed prophethood, and Abū Bakr b. Abī Quḥāfa has followed him.” He said: I went out until I entered upon Abū Bakr and said, “Have you followed this man?” He said, “Yes. So go to him, enter upon him, and follow him; for he calls to the truth.” Then Ṭalḥa told him what the monk had said. Abū Bakr went out with Ṭalḥa and entered with him upon the Messenger of God ﷺ, and Ṭalḥa embraced Islam and told the Messenger of God ﷺ what the monk had said, and he was pleased with that. When Abū Bakr and Ṭalḥa embraced Islam, Nawfal b. Khuwaylid b. al-ʿAdawiyya—who was called the Lion of Quraysh—seized them and bound them with a single rope, and the Banū Taym did not protect them. For that reason Abū Bakr and Ṭalḥa were called “the Two Companions.” And the Prophet ﷺ said: “O God, suffice us against the evil of Ibn al-ʿAdawiyya.” Al-Bayhaqī narrated it.
