Translation

✧ The Islam of Zayd b. Ḥārithah Ibn Isḥāq said: Then Zayd b. Ḥārithah b. Shuraḥbīl b. Kaʿb b. ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā b. Imriʾ al-Qays al-Kalbī, the client of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, embraced Islam. He was the first male to embrace Islam and he prayed after ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib. [His lineage and the reason for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ adopting him] Ibn Hishām said: Zayd b. Ḥārithah b. Sharāḥīl b. Kaʿb b. ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā b. Imriʾ al-Qays b. ʿĀmir b. al-Nuʿmān b. ʿĀmir b. ʿAbd Wudd b. ʿAwf b. Kinānah b. Bakr b. ʿAwf b. ʿUdhrah b. Zayd al-Lāt b. Rufaydah b. Thawr b. Kalb b. Wabarah. Ḥakīm b. Ḥizām b. Khuwaylid had come from Syria with slaves, among them Zayd b. Ḥārithah, a servant boy. His aunt Khadījah bt. Khuwaylid entered upon him, and she was at that time married to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said to her: “Choose, O aunt, whichever of these boys you wish, and he will be yours.” So she chose Zayd and took him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw him with her, asked her to give him to him, and she gave him to him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ freed him and adopted him, and that was before revelation came to him. [The poetry of Ḥārithah when he lost his son Zayd, and his coming to the Messenger ﷺ to ask him to return him to him] His father Ḥārithah had grieved over him with intense grief and wept for him when he lost him, and he said: I wept for Zayd, not knowing what he had done, Is he alive, to be hoped for, or has death overtaken him? By Allah, I do not know—and indeed I am asking— Did the plain take you after me, or did the mountain take you? Would that I knew whether time will ever bring you back, For returning to me would suffice me from all the world. The sun reminds me of him at its rising, And his remembrance comes to me when its setting has disappeared. And when the winds blow, they stir up his memory, So how long is my sorrow for him and how great my fear! I shall urge on the camels across the land, striving, And I will not tire of roaming, or the camels tire, As long as I live, or until death comes upon me, For every man perishes, even if hope deceives him. Then he came to him while he was with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: “If you wish, stay with me, and if you wish, depart with your father.” He said: “Rather I will stay with you.” He remained with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until Allah sent him, and he believed him and embraced Islam and prayed with him. When Allah, mighty and glorious, revealed: “Call them by their fathers,” he said: “I am Zayd b. Ḥārithah.”
