Quraysh's Building of the Kaʿbah and the Prophet's ﷺ Judgment Among Them in Placing the Stone
Translation
✧ Ibn Isḥāq said: The Kaʿbah at the time of the Prophet ﷺ was eighteen cubits [high], and it was draped with qabāṭī [fine Egyptian linen], then after that it was draped with burūd [striped Yemeni cloaks], and the first to drape it with dībāj [silk brocade] was al-Ḥajjāj b. Yūsuf. I say: They had excluded from it the Ḥijr, which is six cubits or seven cubits from the direction of Syria—that was because the funds fell short for them, meaning they were not able to build it upon the foundations of Ibrāhīm. They made for the Kaʿbah a single door on the eastern side, and they made it elevated so that not everyone could enter it, so that they could admit whom they wished and prevent whom they wished. It is established in the two Ṣaḥīḥs from ʿĀʾishah ؓ that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Do you not see that your people’s funds fell short? Were it not that your people are recent in disbelief, I would demolish the Kaʿbah and make for it an eastern door and a western door, and I would incorporate the Ḥijr into it.” For this reason, when Ibn al-Zubayr gained the ability, he built it according to what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had indicated, and it came out in the utmost splendor, beauty, and radiance, complete upon the foundations of al-Khalīl [Ibrāhīm], with two doors adjoining the ground, on the east and on the west; people would enter from this one and exit from the other. When al-Ḥajjāj killed Ibn al-Zubayr, he wrote to ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān, who was the caliph then, concerning what Ibn al-Zubayr had done, and they believed that he had done that of his own accord, so he ordered its restoration to what it had been. They went to the Syrian wall, cut it down, and excluded from it the Ḥijr; they set its stones in the ground of the Kaʿbah, so its door became elevated, and they blocked the western one, while the eastern one continued as it had been. When it came to the time of al-Mahdī or his father al-Manṣūr, he consulted Mālik about restoring it to what Ibn al-Zubayr had done, and Mālik, may Allah have mercy on him, said: “I dislike that kings should make it a plaything,” so he left it as it is, and it remains thus to this day.
