Translation
✧ [Poetry of al-Zubayr about the serpent that Quraysh feared for the building of the Kaʿbah ] Quraysh, Quraysh feared the building of the Kaʿbah because of it: : I marveled at when the eagle swooped down upon the serpent, while it was in agitation; And it had a hissing sound, And sometimes it had a leaping. When we rose to the foundation it would tighten, It frightened us from the building, and it was also frightened. When we feared the punishment, there came An eagle swooping down with a swift descent. It pressed it to itself, then left For us the building, with no barrier to it. So we rose, gathering together, to a building For which we have the foundations and the dust. On the morning we raised the foundation from it, And upon our levelers no garments. Through it the King honored Banū Luʾayy, And its root among them shall not vanish. Banū ʿAdiyy gathered there, And Murrah had been preceded by Kilāb. So the King granted us through that an honor, And with God is sought the reward. Ibn Hishām said: And it is narrated: And upon our levelers no garments.
