Translation

✧ Mention of his wet-nurses and foster-mothers ﷺ Umm Ayman, whose name was Barakah, used to tend him, and he ﷺ had inherited her from his father. When he grew up, he freed her and married her to his freedman Zayd b. Ḥārithah, and she bore him Usāmah b. Zayd ؓ. Along with his mother, he ﷺ was suckled, before Ḥalīmah al-Saʿdiyyah, by Thuwaybah, the freedwoman of his uncle Abū Lahab. Al-Bukhārī and Muslim related in their Ṣaḥīḥs from the ḥadīth of al-Zuhrī, from ʿUrwah b. al-Zubayr, from Zaynab bt. Umm Salamah, from Umm Ḥabībah bt. Abī Sufyān, who said: "O Messenger of Allah, marry my sister, the daughter of Abū Sufyān"—and in Muslim's version: "ʿAzzah bt. Abī Sufyān"—so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Would you like that?" I said: "Yes, I am not one to leave you to yourself, and I would love whoever shares with me in the good of my sister." The Prophet ﷺ said: "That is not lawful for me." She said: "We are told that you intend to marry the daughter of Abū Salamah"—and in another version: "Durrah bt. Abī Salamah." He said: "The daughter of Umm Salamah?" I said: "Yes." He said: "Even if she were not my stepdaughter in my care, she would not be lawful for me, for she is the daughter of my brother through suckling: Thuwaybah suckled both me and Abū Salamah. So do not offer me your daughters or your sisters." Al-Bukhārī added: ʿUrwah said: "Thuwaybah was a freedwoman of Abū Lahab; he freed her and she suckled the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When Abū Lahab died, one of his family saw him in a dream in the worst state of disappointment and said to him: 'What did you encounter?' Abū Lahab said: 'I encountered no good after you, except that I was given a drink in this—the hollow between the thumb and the finger next to it—because of my freeing Thuwaybah.'" Al-Suhaylī and others mentioned that the one who saw him was his brother al-ʿAbbās, and that this was a year after Abū Lahab's death, after the Battle of Badr. In it: Abū Lahab said to al-ʿAbbās: "It is made lighter for me on a day like Monday." They said: "Because when Thuwaybah brought him the good news of the birth of his nephew Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allah, he freed her on the spot, and so he was rewarded for that."
