Translation

✧ The Day of Muʿabbis and Muḍarris Then they met at Muʿabbis and Muḍarris, which are two walls. The Khazraj were behind Muḍarris, and the Aws were behind Muʿabbis. They remained for days fighting a fierce fight. Then the Aws were routed until they entered the houses and the strongholds. It was an ugly rout, the like of which they had never suffered before. Then Banū ʿAmr b. ʿAwf and Banū Aws Manāt of the Aws made peace with the Khazraj. Banū ʿAbd al-Ashhal, Banū Ẓafar, and others of the Aws refused to make peace and said: "We will not make peace until we attain our vengeance from the Khazraj." The Khazraj pressed them with harm and raiding when Banū ʿAmr b. ʿAwf and Aws Manāt made peace with them. The Aws, except those we have mentioned, resolved to depart from Madinah. Banū Salamah raided property belonging to Banū al-Ashhal called al-Raʿl, and they fought them over it. Saʿd b. Muʿādh al-Ashhalī was severely wounded. Banū Salamah carried him to ʿAmr b. al-Jamūḥ al-Khazrajī, who granted him protection and protected al-Raʿl from burning and the cutting of trees. When the Day of Buʿāth came, Saʿd repaid him as we shall mention, God willing. Then the Aws traveled to Makkah to form an alliance with Quraysh against the Khazraj, and they made it appear that they intended ʿumrah. It was their custom that when one of them intended ʿumrah or ḥajj, his adversary would not confront him, and the one performing ʿumrah would hang palm-leaf stalks on his house. They did that and traveled to Makkah. They arrived there and made an alliance with Quraysh while Abū Jahl was absent. When he arrived, he disapproved of that and said to Quraysh: "Have you not heard the saying of the first: 'Woe to the family from the one who alights!' They are people of number and endurance. It is seldom that a people alight upon a people except that they expel them from their land and overcome them in it." They said: "What is the way out of their alliance?" He said: "I will suffice you against them." Then he went out until he came to the Aws and said: "You have made an alliance with my people while I was absent, so I have come to make an alliance with you and to mention to you something of our affair after which you will be at the head of your affair. We are a people whose slave women go out to our markets, and a man among us may catch a slave woman and strike her buttocks. If it pleases you that your women do the like of what our women do, we will make an alliance with you. If you dislike that, then return to us our alliance." They said: "We do not approve of this." The Anṣār, all of them, had intense jealousy. So they returned to them their alliance and traveled to their lands. Ḥassān b. Thābit said, boasting of what his people achieved against the Aws: Alā abliGh Abā Qaysin rasūlan idhā alqā lahā samʿan tubīn Falastu li-ḥāṣinin in lam tazurkum Khillāla al-dāri musbilatun ṭaḥūn Yadīnu lahā al-ʿazīzu idhā raʾāhā Wa-yahrubu min makhāfatihā al-qaṭīn Tashību al-nāhidu al-ʿadhrāʾu minhā Wa-yasquṭu min makhāfatihā al-janīn Yaṭūfu bikum mina al-Najjāri usdun Ka-usdi al-ghīli maskanuhā al-ʿarīn Yaẓallu al-laythu fīhā mustakīnan Lahu fī kulli multafatin anīn Kaʾanna bahāʾahā lil-nāẓirīhā Mina al-athlāti wal-bīḍi al-fatīn Kaʾannahumu mina al-mādhī ʿalayhim Jamālun ḥīna yajtalidūna jūn Faqad lāqāka qabla Buʿātha qatlun Wa-baʿda Buʿātha dhullun mustakīn It is also long.
