Genealogy of Our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and Some Accounts of His Forefathers and Ancestors
يَوْمُ الْفِجَارِ الْأَوَّلِ لِلْأَنْصَارِ وَلَيْسَ بِفِجَارِ كِنَانَةَ وَقَيْسٍ. فَلَمَّا قَتَلَتِ الْأَوْسُ الْغِلْمَانَ جَمَعَتِ الْخَزْرَجُ وَحَشَدُوا وَالْتَقَوْا بِالْحَدَائِقِ، وَعَلَى الْخَزْرَجِ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ أُبَيِّ بْنِ سَلُولٍ، وَعَلَى الْأَوْسِ أَبُو قَيْسِ بْنُ الْأَسْلَتِ، فَاقْتَتَلُوا قِتَالًا شَدِيدًا حَتَّى كَادَ بَعْضُهُمْ يُفْنِي بَعْضًا. وَسُمِّيَ ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمُ يَوْمَ الْفِجَارِ لِغَدْرِهِمْ بِالْغِلْمَانِ، وَهُوَ الْفِجَارُ الْأَوَّلُ، فَكَانَ قَيْسُ بْنُ الْخَطِيمِ فِي حَائِطٍ لَهُ، فَانْصَرَفَ فَوَافَقَ قَوْمَهُ قَدْ بَرَزُوا لِلْقِتَالِ، فَعَجَزَ عَنْ أَخْذِ سِلَاحِهِ إِلَّا السَّيْفَ ثُمَّ خَرَجَ مَعَهُمْ، فَعَظُمَ مَقَامُهُ يَوْمَئِذٍ وَأَبْلَى بَلَاءً حَسَنًا وَجُرِحَ جِرَاحَةً شَدِيدَةً، فَمَكَثَ حِينًا يَتَدَاوَى مِنْهَا، وَأُمِرَ أَنْ يَحْتَمِيَ عَنِ الْمَاءِ، فَلِذَلِكَ يَقُولُ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ رَوَاحَةَ: رَمَيْنَاكَ أَيَّامَ الْفِجَارِ فَلَمْ تَزَلْ حَمِيًّا فَمَنْ يَشْرَبْ فَلَسْتَ بِشَارِبِ
Translation
✧ The First Day of al-Fijār of the Anṣār It is not the Fijār of Kinānah and Qays. When the Aws killed the young men, the Khazraj gathered and assembled, and they met at al-Ḥadāʾiq. Over the Khazraj was ʿAbd Allāh b. Ubayy b. Salūl, and over the Aws was Abū Qays b. al-Aslat. They fought a fierce battle until they nearly destroyed one another. That day was named the Day of al-Fijār because of their treachery against the young men, and it is the first Fijār. Qays b. al-Khaṭīm was in a garden of his; he departed and came upon his people as they had gone forth to fight. He was unable to take his weapons except the sword, then he went out with them. His stand that day was great, and he acquitted himself well and was severely wounded. He remained for a time treating himself for it, and was ordered to abstain from water. For that reason ʿAbd Allāh b. Rawāḥah says: We shot at you on the days of al-Fijār, and you have remained abstinent; so whoever drinks, you are not a drinker.
