Translation

✧ The Day of al-Baqīʿ Then the Aws and the Khazraj met at Baqīʿ al-Gharqad and fought a fierce battle, and victory that day belonged to the Aws. ʿUbayd b. Nāqid al-Awsī said: When I saw the Banū ʿAwf and their gathered host, they came, and the gathered host of the Banū al-Najjār had assembled in force. I summoned my people and smoothed the way for them to the place whose companions had alighted. Bands from Mālik gave their lives generously on the day of meeting, and they did not fear or falter. They passed around to you the cups of death when they came forth in the middle of the day, until the afternoon declined. Until they stood firm, and the struggle had lasted long for them, and every one of them had drunk his fill of the people's blood. The white swords were drawn away from slain men having ties of kin; were it not for peacemaking and kinship ties, they would not have carried them off. Every girl whose guardian was absent says: Have all of those we left behind of our people been slain? You have indeed slain a noble man of protective honor, whom the singers and fine garments had allied with. Generous in his gifts, sweet in his qualities, well-watered was the one entering upon drink; the camels are wearied by him. Al-wāghil: the one who enters upon a people while they are drinking. ʿAbd Allāh b. Rawāḥa al-Ḥārithī al-Khazrajī answered him: When I saw the Banū ʿAwf and their brothers, Kaʿb, and the gathered host of the Banū al-Najjār had assembled in force, Of old they made your sanctuary lawful with the swords, and no one has done to you the like of what they did. The chief of the Aws that day in the war of Ḥāṭib was Abū Qays b. al-Aslat al-Wāʾilī. He rose to their war and abandoned rest, and he became thin and changed in appearance. One day he came to his wife, and she did not recognize him until she knew him by his speech. She said: "I did not recognize you until you spoke!" He said: She said, and she did not intend to utter indecent speech: "Gently! You have made my hearing fully aware." She found strange a pale complexion of his, for war is a ghoul possessing pains. Whoever tastes war finds its taste bitter, and it leaves him in a state of exhaustion. The helmet has scraped my head, so that I do not taste sleep except in brief dozes. I strive on behalf of the best of the Banū Mālik; every man is striving in his own affair. I have prepared for the enemies a well-woven coat of mail, wide and flowing like a pool in the open plain. I push it away from me with a gleaming blade, an Indian sword like lightning, cutting. A true sharp sword whose edge is piercing, and a straight brown spear that strikes hard. And it is a long poem. Then Abū Qays b. al-Aslat gathered the Aws and said to them: "I have never been chief of a people but that they were defeated. So appoint over yourselves whom you love." So they appointed over themselves Ḥuḍayr al-Katāʾib b. al-Simāk al-Ashhālī, and he is the father of Usayd b. Ḥuḍayr. His son was a Companion, and he was a Badrī. Ḥuḍayr then took charge of their affairs in their wars. The Aws and the Khazraj then met at a place called al-Ghars, and victory belonged to the Aws. Then they exchanged messages about peace and made peace on the condition that they count the slain, and whoever had the surplus against him would pay the blood-money. The Aws had a surplus over the Khazraj of three men, so the Khazraj handed over three youths from among them as a pledge for the blood-monies. But the Aws acted treacherously and killed the youths.
