Translation

✧ Account of the war of Kaʿb b. ʿAmr al-Māzinī Then the Banū Jaḥjabā of the Aws and the Banū Māzin b. al-Najjār of the Khazraj fell into war among themselves. Its cause was that Kaʿb b. ʿAmr al-Māzinī married a woman of the Banū Sālim, and he used to go back and forth to her. Uḥayḥa b. al-Julāḥ, the chief of the Banū Jaḥjabā, ordered a group, and they lay in wait for him until they got hold of him and killed him. That reached his brother ʿĀṣim b. ʿAmr, so he ordered his people, and they prepared for fighting, and he sent to the Banū Jaḥjabā announcing war to them. They met at al-Raḥāba and fought a fierce battle. The Banū Jaḥjabā and those with them were defeated, and Uḥayḥa was defeated with them. ʿĀṣim b. ʿAmr pursued him and caught up with him after he had entered his fortress, so he shot him with an arrow, and it fell on the gate of the fortress. ʿĀṣim killed a brother of Uḥayḥa. They remained after that for some nights. It reached Uḥayḥa that ʿĀṣim was seeking him out to find him off guard and kill him. Uḥayḥa said: I have been told that you came walking by night between my abode and al-Qubāba. For I found by the side of al-Ḍaḥyān youths held in awe, young men of war in iron, and girt up like lions of a thicket. They turned you aside from the road, so you spent the night riding over every stony tract. O ʿUṣaym, do not be impatient, for war is not a jest. I am the one who came upon you in the morning with the people when they entered al-Raḥāba, and I killed Kaʿb before it, and I struck the forelock with the sword. ʿĀṣim answered him: Convey to Uḥayḥa, if I present myself at his abode, an answer from me. I am the one who made him hasten from a seat that distracted his dogs. I shot at him with an arrow, but it missed him, and there he shut his gate. — in verses. Then Uḥayḥa resolved to make a night raid on the Banū al-Najjār, while with him was Salmā bt. ʿAmr b. Zayd al-Najjāriyya, the mother of ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, the grandfather of the Prophet ﷺ. She did not approve. When night fell upon her and Uḥayḥa had stayed awake with her and then slept, when he slept she went to the Banū al-Najjār and informed them, then returned. So they were on their guard. Uḥayḥa set out with his people at dawn, and the Banū al-Najjār met them in arms. There was some fighting between them, and Uḥayḥa withdrew. It reached him that Salmā had informed them, so he struck her until he broke her hand and let her go. He said some verses, among them: By the life of your father, my standing among the allies avails me not; a heedless eater, she is given in marriage but not drawn up quickly; with the youths his resting place is heavy. She strives for the noble woman wherever she may be, as the young camel returns to its mother. I have prepared for misfortunes a fortress, if only reason could benefit a man. The smith polished it and its striking parts did not fail it, and notches encompassed it. Is there any soothsayer to whom one may resort when the time of alighting from a family comes? He stakes me and I stake him his sons, and I stake my sons for what I say. The poor man does not know when his wealth will come, and the rich man does not know when he will become poor. You do not know, even if you resolve a matter, in which land the midday halt will overtake you. And you do not know, even if you produce a colt, whether the weaned young will be for someone else or for you. Brothers who grew old and became good are not everlasting, and their mother is bereft. She will lose a child, or her sons will leave her through death, or a killer will come to them.
