Translation

✧ Account of the war between Banū ʿAmr b. ʿAwf and Banū al-Ḥārith, which is the Day of al-Sarārah Then, between Banū ʿAmr b. ʿAwf of the Aws and Banū al-Ḥārith of the Khazraj there was a fierce war. Its cause was that a man of Banū ʿAmr was killed by a man of Banū al-Ḥārith, so Banū ʿAmr went out against the killer and killed him treacherously. His family inquired and learned how he had been killed, so they prepared for battle and sent word to Banū ʿAmr b. ʿAwf announcing war. They met at al-Sarārah, with Ḥuḍayr b. Simāk—the father of Usayd b. Ḥuḍayr—commanding the Aws, and ʿAbd Allāh b. Salūl, Abū al-Ḥubāb, who was the head of the hypocrites, commanding the Khazraj. They fought a fierce battle, with each side holding firm against the other for four days. Then the Aws withdrew to their dwellings, and the Khazraj boasted of that. Ḥassān b. Thābit said about that: May my mother and my maternal aunt be a ransom for Banū al-Najjār, on the morning they met them with the straightened brown spears, and a band of the tribes, ʿAmr b. Mālik, whenever they called, theirs was the call of victory. By God, I shall never forget, as long as I live, their trial, on the morning they hurled ʿAmr with a back-breaking blow. Ḥassān also said: By the life of your father, the best, by the truth, my tongue has not failed me in misfortunes, nor has my hand. My tongue and my sword are both sharp; my tongue reaches what the sword does not reach. Neither hardship makes me forget my modesty and chastity, nor do the blows of time dull my file. I increase my family with dependents other than them, and I fold over the clear, cooled water. And among them: Truly I am a rescuer of mounts when they are footsore, and truly I descend upon what I am not accustomed to. Truly I say to the one in need: Welcome, and welcome, when he is frightened from every watch-post. Truly generosity calls me, and I answer it, and I strike the white of the flashing cheek. Do not hasten, O Qays, and wait; for indeed your utmost is to be met with every Indian sword, a sharp sword and spears in the hands of mighty ones; whenever you see them, O Ibn al-Khaṭīm, you will crouch, lions at their dens, their lair protected, piercing with the Khaṭṭī spears in every witness. And these are many verses. Qays b. al-Khaṭīm answered him: Do you return from the fair one, or are you setting out early? And how can a lover depart without provision? She appeared to us on the day of departure with the eyes of a startled one, by a solitary lote-tree of tangled branches, and a neck like the neck of a gazelle, adorned, which is beautified upon the chest by a ruby and a chrysolite bezel. It is as if the Pleiades above the hollow of her breast blazed in the darkness—how they blazed! Indeed, between al-Sharʿabī and Rātij there is striking like the cutting of the upward-growing acacia. We have two walls, death is below them, and a gathering that, whenever it cries out in Yathrib, ascends. You see the black lava-field, its color turning red, and every open space and hard plain becomes easy from it. Truly I am the most independent of people from one who pretends, who sees people as astray and is not himself guided. It would grieve ʿAmr, a bull, wretched, admonished, quarrelsome, as if his head were the head of a snake, with many hopes for provisions, no patience in him; when he hungers one day, he complains of it the next forenoon. And one of harsh character opposed my character, so I said to him: Leave me and yourself, be guided. Wealth and character are only borrowed, so whatever you can of its kindness, take as provision. Whenever you lead the truth with falsehood, it refuses; but if you lead the mountains with truth, they will be led. When you come to a matter from other than its door, you go astray; but if you enter by the door, you are guided. And it is long. And ʿUbayd b. Nāqid said: Whose are the abodes, as if they were gilded? They have decayed, and the passing ages with their change have altered them. He says in it, mentioning the battle: But the flight of Abū al-Ḥubāb with his own self on the Day of al-Sarārah—the nearest one was displeased by it. He turned and cast away his coat of mail that day when it was said: Death has come behind you, pursuing. He saved you from us after the spears had been leveled at you; there the gilded one was girded. And it is also long. Abū al-Ḥubāb is ʿAbd Allāh b. Salūl.
