Translation
✧ The War of Sumayr. The Ansar remained in a state of concord and unity, and the first disagreement that occurred among them and war they had was the War of Sumayr. Its cause was that a man from Banu Thaʿlabah of Saʿd b. Dhubyan called Kaʿb b. al-ʿAjlan alighted with Malik b. al-ʿAjlan al-Salimi, made an alliance with him, and stayed with him. One day Kaʿb went out to the market of Banu Qaynuqaʿ and saw a man from Ghatafan with him a horse, and he was saying: 'Let the most honored of the people of Yathrib take this horse.' One man said: 'So-and-so.' Another man said: 'Uhayhah b. al-Julah al-Awsi.' And others than them said: 'So-and-so b. so-and-so the Jew is the best of its people.' The Ghatafani gave the horse to Malik b. al-ʿAjlan. Kaʿb said: 'Did I not tell you that my ally Malik is the best of you?' A man from the Aws of Banu ʿAmr b. ʿAwf called Sumayr became angry at that, insulted him, and they parted. And Kaʿb remained as long as Allah willed. Then he headed for a market they had at Qubaʾ, and Sumayr headed for him and stayed close to him until the market was empty, then he killed him. Malik b. al-ʿAjlan was informed of his killing, and he sent to Banu ʿAmr b. ʿAwf demanding his killer. They sent back: 'We do not know who killed him.' Messengers went back and forth between them: he demanding Sumayr, and they denying his killing. Then they offered him blood-money, and he accepted it. The blood-money of an ally among them was half the blood-money of a kinsman of them. But Malik refused except to take full blood-money, and they refused that and said: 'We give the blood-money of an ally, which is half.' The matter persisted between them until it led to fighting. They gathered, met, and fought a severe battle, then separated. And all the clans of the Ansar entered into it. Then they met another time and fought until the night separated them. Victory that day was for the Aws. When they separated, the Aws sent to Malik inviting him to have al-Mundhir b. Haram al-Najjari al-Khazraji, the grandfather of Hassan b. Thabit b. al-Mundhir, judge between them. He answered them to that. They came to al-Mundhir, and al-Mundhir judged between them that they should pay the blood-money for Kaʿb, the ally of Malik, as the blood-money of a pure-born man, then return to their old custom. They were satisfied with that, carried the blood-money, and separated. But hatred had ignited in their souls, and enmity took firm hold between them.
