Translation
✧ [The Virtue of Zamzam and What Poetry Was Said About It] Ibn Isḥāq said: Zamzam overflowed over the wells that had been before it, from which the pilgrims used to draw water, and the people turned to it because of its location in the Sacred Mosque, and because of its excellence over all other waters, and because it is the well of Ismāʿīl, son of Ibrāhīm (peace be upon them both). The Banū ʿAbd Manāf boasted of it over all of Quraysh and over the rest of the Arabs. Musāfir b. Abī ʿAmr b. Umayyah b. ʿAbd Shams b. ʿAbd Manāf said, boasting over Quraysh because of the office of providing water and food to the pilgrims that they had been entrusted with, and because of what they offered to the people of that, and because of Zamzam when it appeared for them — and the Banū ʿAbd Manāf were but one household; the honor of some of them was honor for the others, and the excellence of some of them was excellence for the others: We inherited glory from our fathers, so it grew with us upward; did we not give drink to the pilgrims and slaughter the plump, generously gifted camels; and we are found, at the turnings of fates, strong in support. If we perish, we are not enslaved; and who remains forever? And Zamzam is in our root-stock, and we gouge out the eye of the envious. Ibn Hishām said: These verses are from a poem of his. Ibn Isḥāq said: Ḥudhayfah b. Ghānim, the brother of the Banū ʿAdī b. Kaʿb b. Luʾayy, said: The one who gives the pilgrims drink, then for good, is Hāshim; and ʿAbd Manāf is that master of the Fihr clan. He folded up Zamzam by the Maqām, and its watering-place became a boast over every boaster. Ibn Hishām said: He means ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib b. Hāshim. These two verses are from a poem of Ḥudhayfah b. Ghānim.
