Genealogy of Our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and Some Accounts of His Forefathers and Ancestors

قَالَ: فَلَمَّا بَيَّنَ لِي شَأْنَهَا، وَدَلَّ عَلَى مَوْضِعِهَا، وَعَرَفَ أَنَّهُ قَدْ صُدِقَ، غَدًا بِمِعْوَلِهِ، وَمَعَهُ ابْنُهُ الْحَارِثُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ - ✧ Account of the Renewal of the Excavation of Zamzam at the hands of ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib b. Hāshim, whose trace had been effaced after Jurhum had filled it in, down to his time. Muḥammad b. Isḥāq said: Then, while ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib was sleeping in the Ḥijr, someone came to him and commanded him to excavate Zamzam. The first thing with which ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib began its excavation, as Yazīd b. Abī Ḥabīb al-Miṣrī related to me, from Marthad b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Yazanī, from ʿAbd Allāh b. Zurayr al-Ghāfiqī, that he heard ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib relate the account of Zamzam when ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib was commanded to excavate it. He said: ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib said: I was sleeping in the Ḥijr when a visitor came to me and said to me: "Dig Ṭaybah." He said: I said: "And what is Ṭaybah?" He said: Then he went away from me. When the next day came, I returned to my resting place and slept, and he came to me and said: "Dig Barrah." He said: I said: "And what is Barrah?" He said: Then he went away from me. When the next day came, I returned to my resting place and slept, and he came to me and said: "Dig al-Maḍnūnah." He said: I said: "And what is al-Maḍnūnah?" He said: Then he went away from me. When the next day came, I returned to my resting place and slept in it, and he came to me and said: "Dig Zamzam." He said: I said: "And what is Zamzam?" He said: "It never runs dry and is never blamed; it gives drink to the greatest multitude of pilgrims. It is between the offal and the blood, at the pecking place of the white-footed crow, at the ant village." He said: When he had made its matter clear to me, and indicated its location, and I knew that he had been believed, he went in the morning with his pickaxe, and with him was his son al-Ḥārith b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib — and he had no son other than him that day — and he dug. When the masonry appeared to ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, he proclaimed the takbīr, and Quraysh knew that he had attained his need. They rose to him and said: "O ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, it is the well of our father Ismāʿīl, and we have a right in it, so make us partners with you in it." He said: "I will not do so. This matter has been singled out for me to the exclusion of you, and I have been given it from among you." They said to him: "Then deal fairly with us, for we will not leave you until we dispute with you over it." He said: "Then appoint between me and you whomever you wish, and I will submit to his judgment." They said: "The priestess of Banū Saʿd b. Hudhaym." He said: "Yes." She was at the highlands of Syria. So ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib mounted, and with him a group from Banū Umayyah, and from every tribe of Quraysh a group mounted. They set out, and the land at that time was waterless desert, until when they were in part of it, the water of ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib and his companions ran out, and they became thirsty until they were certain of destruction. They asked those with them for water, but they refused them, saying: "We are in a waterless desert, and we fear for ourselves the like of what has befallen you." ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib said: "I think each man of you should dig his own grave with the strength you still have. Whenever a man dies, his companions push him into his grave and then cover him, until the last of them is a single man, for the loss of one man is easier than the loss of the whole caravan together." They said: "What you have commanded is good." So each man dug a grave for himself, and then they sat waiting for death from thirst. Then ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib said to his companions: "Our throwing ourselves into death like this — not striking out into the land, not seeking anything for ourselves — is weakness. Perhaps God will provide us water in some land." So they set out again, and when ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib urged his mount forward, a spring of sweet water burst forth from beneath its hoof. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib proclaimed the takbīr, and his companions proclaimed the takbīr. Then he dismounted and drank, and his companions drank, and they drew water until they filled their waterskins. Then he called the tribes of Quraysh, who were watching them throughout all these events, and said: "Come to the water, for God has given us drink." They came and drank and all drew water. Then they said to ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib: "By God, judgment has been given in your favor against us. By God, we will never dispute with you over Zamzam. The one who gave you this water in this waste land is the one who will give you Zamzam. Return to your watering place rightly guided." So he returned, and they returned with him, and they did not reach the priestess, and they left him alone with Zamzam. Ibn Isḥāq said: This is what has reached me from ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib concerning Zamzam. Ibn Isḥāq said: I have also heard someone relate from ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib that when he was commanded to excavate Zamzam, it was said to him: Then call for water, abundant and not turbid, giving drink to God's pilgrims in every place of righteousness, from which nothing need be feared as long as it lasts. He said: When that was said to him, ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib went out to Quraysh and said: "Know that I have been commanded to excavate Zamzam." They said: "Has its location been made clear to you?" He said: "No." They said: "Then return to your resting place in which you saw what you saw. If it is true from God, He will make it clear to you; if it is from Satan, he will not return to you." He returned and slept, and someone came to him and said to him: "Dig Zamzam. If you dig it, you will not regret it. It is an inheritance from your greatest forefather. It never runs dry and is never blamed; it gives drink to the greatest multitude of pilgrims, like abundant ostriches that are not divided; a vower makes vows in it to the Benefactor. It will be an inheritance and a firm covenant, not like some of what you know, and it is between the offal and the blood." Ibn Isḥāq said: They claimed that when that was said to ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, he said: "And where is it?" It was said to him: "At the ant village, where the crow will peck tomorrow." God knows best which of these it was. He said: ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib went in the morning with his son al-Ḥārith — and he had no son other than him that day — al-Umawī added: and his freedman Aṣram — and he found the ant village, and he found the crow pecking at it, between the two idols Isāf and Nāʾilah, at which Quraysh used to sacrifice. He came with the pickaxe and stood to dig where he was commanded. Quraysh rose against him and said: "By God, we will not let you dig between our two idols at which we sacrifice." ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib said to his son al-Ḥārith: "Defend me so that I can dig, for by God, I will carry out what I have been commanded." When they knew that he would not desist, they left him to dig and held back from him. He had dug but a little when the masonry appeared to him, and he proclaimed the takbīr, and he knew that he had been believed. When he continued digging, he found in it two golden gazelles that Jurhum had buried, and he found in it Qalʿī swords and coats of mail. Quraysh said to him: "O ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, we have a share and a right with you in this." He said: "No. But come to a matter of equal division between me and you: we cast lots for it with arrows." They said: "How shall we do that?" He said: "I will assign two arrows for the Kaʿbah, two for me, and two for you. Whichever two arrows come out for something, it belongs to that party, and whichever two arrows fail, that party gets nothing." They said: "You have been fair." So he assigned two yellow arrows for the Kaʿbah, two black ones for himself, and two white ones for them. Then they gave the arrows to the one who cast lots at Hubal, and Hubal was the greatest of their idols. For this reason Abū Sufyān said on the day of Uḥud: "Exalted be Hubal," meaning this idol. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib stood calling upon God, and Yūnus b. Bukayr mentioned from Muḥammad b. Isḥāq that ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib began saying: O God, You are the praiseworthy King, my Lord, You are the Originator and the Restorer, and the Holder of the firmly fixed massive rocks. From You come both the newly acquired and the inherited. If You will, You inspire as You wish, for the place of the ornaments and the iron. So make clear today what You will. I have vowed the covenant that is pledged. Make it mine, O Lord, so that I do not go back. He said: The one with the arrows cast, and the two yellow ones came out for the two gazelles, for the Kaʿbah, and the two black ones came out for the swords and the coats of mail, for ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, and the two arrows of Quraysh failed. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib hammered the swords into a door for the Kaʿbah, and he hammered the two golden gazelles onto the door. Thus it was the first gold with which the Kaʿbah was adorned — as they claim. Then ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib established the watering of Zamzam for the pilgrims.
